For some reason, Talladega Nights looks very dark and dull in 4K on Netflix. I wonder if there's any reason to expect it to look different in a 4K UHD release?

Have we seen any films look very different from their 4K digital streaming versions when they arrive on disk?

I went with...

QUESTION ONE:

Anatomy of a Murder

QUESTION TWO:

Krull (Love this film and it could look marvellous, like Sony's version of Flash Gordon. A nice collector's set with the James Horner soundtrack as an extra?)

I Know What You Did Last Summer (So what? I dig the flick, and it would benefit from inky blacks and nice specular highlights)

2012 (Okay, I don't have much an excuse for this, other than to say it would probably look terrific in 4K).

Honourable mentions included Karate Kid II, Fright Night, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Talladega Nights.

I also wrote in a request in the comments box for De Palma's Body Double, Carpenter's Starman and Battle Los Angeles.

May I ask a couple of questions?

Firstly, when did the poll appear for the first set; how long was it between its publication and Volume 1's June '20 release?

Secondly, it strikes me there are 18 films on that first list, and there were 17 UHDs in Volume 1. That would appear to give all of the films on the list a very good chance indeed of appearing. So my question is, what was on the poll for Volume 1 and how many ended up in the eventual release?

Many thanks.

I just realised that Drive is Sony. Still no sign of it, and wish I'd written a request for it now ...

Well, I've made a complete cock up there, on all fronts.

Firstly, there are only 6 films in it, not 17 (the Blu-ray box is 17 discs).

Secondly, only 2 of the top list and none of the second made the cut.

Any idea what date the poll went up?

Many thanks.

Not many options. I went with...

1. On The Waterfront
2. Karate Kid 2
3. Talledega Nights

Sigh, no love for Lost Horizon here apparently. I voted that as my number 1. Go underdogs!

Hudson Hawk! Can’t believe they listed it. That’s my biggest hope. It’s the 30th anniversary next year too

I guess because some of the footage was lost and pops up as still production frames. A lot here seem to be basing their choices on how the film would possibly look in 4k rather than the quality of the film itself.

Hence, Talledega Nights keeps getting selected for some strange reason. It's one of those dumb, but still dumb Will Ferrell movies like Anchorman that treats the audience like complete dolts and the product placement is just crazy intense. It's nowhere near his Old School, Stranger than Fiction, or Everything Must Go efforts. Hell, I even like Blades of Glory more than Ricky Bobby. I guess I'm not a Sacha Baron Cohen fan, for one. He tries too hard to be funny.

I have it on my list too. Relatively an underrated film, but it is fun.

I guess we need a poll to vote the 4 titles we picked and see the overall picture!

I know Stealth (2005) will probably never get a UHD, but man that movie would have a killer Atmos track.

Given how lovely an upgrade some of the black and white catalog titles have been on UHD, I am truly hoping Gilda gets an upgrade and can benefit. With that said, however, I have the Criterion BD, and I am not sure if it's the source material or what, but a lot of the time as I watch it, I feel like "there's really not much more to be gleaned from the source here". But, again, that is just based on a hunch/gut feeling. Even if the detail doesn't necessarily resolve better, from what I've read a good HDR pass can do wonders on B&W.

Probably not in detail. HDR black levels, definitely the difference maker.

I'm going to be writing in Das Boot. I really want to own that in 4k with an Atmos soundtrack!! If anyone else can write it in too, it would be appreciated.

Watched 'I Walk The Line' *ing Gregory Peck. Currently playing on Prime Video. Lovely film, poorly shot, terrible camera work, dont know if the source is so bad or if its a dated DVD master. But is worthy of a home on disc in HD
