The U.K. has leaped over Digital HD and went straight to subscription. That’s why Premium VOD has got a chance if it’s built into those services. We seem to be either collectors of disc or subscription in the U.K.

British Up Digital Movie Transactions 87% During Pandemic Lockdown

New data from the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) and compiled by The Official Charts Company shows that consumer spending on digital movie purchases grew by more than 87% during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown period through June 30 to £113 million ($148 million). The United Kingdom is the second-largest home video market in the world.

Examining the wider transactional VOD market, data from Kantar suggests 1.8 million new customers either bought or rented digital content during lockdown, taking the number of consumers transacting digitally in that period to a record high of 5.5 million.

In the 12 week period from March 28 when the British government introduced its “stay home” policy, digital purchases accounted for 51% of the market as consumers engaged with the depth of range of titles available through digital home viewing options, with 49% attributed to sales of physical media (DVD, Blu-ray Disc and 4K UHD Blu-ray). While growth in digital ownership was already evident, with its share at 29% in the same period in 2019 and at 37% in the 12 weeks prior to lockdown, the data suggests transactional VOD made huge gains at a time when many of consumers were forced to stay home.

Disc did fine considering but it was always going to suffer in the last two quarters of this year. It’s naive to think that wouldn’t be the case.

There are no new releases, Blu-ray is a hit driven format. Streaming subscriptions were ALWAYS going to see a boost this year. Sure, back catalogue is a option for disc but that’s a very slim bonus.

Let’s see where we are when all the blockbusters hit (hopefully next year). Get back to me then?

People need to understand that Digital HD is as good as dead. Subscription and PVOD is the growth area. It’s not a like for like comparison. It’s ownership versus rental and pay tv.

When we mention streaming, we need to clearly state subscription streaming.

There is every chance disc will outlast Digital HD. Much in the same way that CD has outlasted MP3 downloads (the once future of music).

History tends to repeat itself.

Change what habits? Subscription was already hugely popular. The services are just going to blend PVOD in with that offering. It’s a limited but potentially financially promising market.

Will people who collect Blu-ray/UHD stop collecting disc?

Digital HD dead? That is wrong. Q2 2020 saw an increase of 57.25% (EST). YTD: up 32.81%.

Total Disc sales YTD: $1,274.56 billion. Total EST sales YTD: $1,613.88 billion. The number show that while physical disc depends on new blockbusters, EST does not.

Can't really compare to music streaming subscription. Too many diffreret movie/tv subsription services. While for music, Apple, Spotify..etc, all offer near identical libraries of music.
