Skipping 4K and waiting for 8K?

I can see 8k becoming popular with video games, and potentially streaming movies and tv shows. Certainly the Digital cinema cameras are capable of achieving that resolution. I do not see the studios embracing an 8k physical disc format, however!.

Discussions could resume it says.. vinyl came back after being dead for 20 years, I rule nothing out. However I do think 4K is it on physical media as we know it, at least for a long time.

There’s never been a better time to buy movies, I feel more secure than ever. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to be dead before I’m compelled to buy Predator again.

Btw the last Avengers movies were shot at 8K. Even at a 2K DI they look incredible.

If you compare "Infinity War" and "Endgame" you will see big differences in PQ. IW looks amazing with an obvious 4K-DI and SFX higher than 2K. "Endgame" doesn't stand a chance even though it's not bad.

The Digital Cinema Initiatives end in December 2020. That's the end of Hollywood supplementing the cost of digital projectors for cinemas. For cinemas to go to 8K they will have to buy/lease those projectors with no help from Hollywood.

The devastation brought about by the COVID-19 Pandemic has left all theater chains with mountains of debt.

Globally there are about 20% of all cinemas using 4K projectors. Here in the USA it's 40%. The rest are 2K projectors.

You don't see a lot of 8K TVs advertisements nor promotions, it's like 8K doesn't even exist, and in reality it doesn't because there is no content. Those 8K TVs were rush to the market primarily just for the early adopters, who always must have the latest and the greatest of every new technology, so they can say they had it first.

Everybody who're buying new TVs are still buying 4K TVs, and walking right pass the 8K TVs. 8K TVs were dead on arrival, and they were only put on the market for the early adopters so they can take their money and run like a bandit. I guess they're going to swindle the early adopters out of their money with the 12K TVs next.

I feel like the return on investment will never let it be a thing.

Maybe we’ll see a special documentary or two on the format, if anything. Maybe something from Korea or Japan. That’s about all I can realistically expect.

8K TVs are about as expensive as mid-premium 4K displays from two years ago, with HDMI 2.1 the next gen gaming consoles will be able to game in 8K too; movies won’t be there for 8K but games will be.

Yeah. They love throwing high resolutions around when hyping up new consoles, but in practice you are lucky to get a smooth 60fps on 1080p games, unless you are playing one of those old games like CS:GO that can run on a toaster.

So, nope, I'm not going with the 2K-DI for "Infinity War". It's clearly 4K to me.

Anyway, there are a lot of movies listed with 2K-DI in the IMDb that just look too good compared to the very good BD.

4K will be the last physical format. At some point it’s just not worth for studios to keep remastering movies and releasing them onto physical. DVDs have done very well because they simply replaced VHS as a standard medium. BluRays have done well but they haven’t replaced DVDs. They more enhanced it for those who have a 1080p TV. 4K physical media is adopting at a slow pace, not from purchasing stand point although it’s only 6% if the physical market but more from studio adoption. Except for new releases which makes sense why to release DVD, BluRay and 4K not a lot of studios are releasing 4K discs anymore. Sony does a decent job, Paramount stepped up, WB and Universal is releasing their favorites but it’s slow. Lionsgate committed to doing a lot and now they are no longer doing that. Hurt Locker came out in 4K on digital with no physical in sight.

8K will be great for live sports. Super Bowl, Masters, World Series. Cool for youtubers displaying their 8K cameras and gaming systems that need to store load of data. It’s never gonna be viable for movies whether digital or physical. Look at Cable companies. Whole lot of stations in SD. Some still charge for HD Channels and access and none of them even have a 4K channel.

In a way it was like BD-Audio. CDs were dying and digital took over and BD Audio certainly being a more massive medium didn’t even pan out.

It's not really a matter of opinion. A high quality 1080p encode can look more detailed than heavily compressed 4K.

In this case the upscale was done from a very high bitrate studio master. The 4K upscale was then encoded with much higher bitrate than the 1080p Bluray, so what you get is a less compressed picture. Less compressed almost always means more detailed.

Or maybe Disney decided to experiment with AI upscaling, either way it's a movie finished in 2K.

Yeah, and even the new consoles releasing later this year will have a hard time reaching true 4K resolution without cutting corners and drastically decreasing framerates, so 8K is something we won't see for a long time, if ever. And that's fine by me. I have a pretty beastly PC and I still prefer 2K gaming (1440p) because when it comes to gaming framerates and higher settings will always trump resolution. 4K isn't important to me at all for games.

When I can buy an 8K TV for under $400 and movie for under $20, I'll bite. Not until then. 4K is competing with Blu-ray price-wise.
