I wish something else like Inland Empire, which could use a new release with tons of extras(and the Hong Kong disc has iffy subtitles), got a release first.
The Australian blu-ray movie and extra disc are region-free so you get the same disc as the Criterion Blu-ray (assuming they didn't fix the cut/fade issue) and you get the 4K disc as a bonus (also region free) if you don't mind the ugly age restriction sticker on the front. All for the same price or lower than Criterion. I have the other Lynch titles on Criterion but to me personally, this was a no-brainer.

I haven’t been able to find the Australian release for a good price. I may be looking in the wrong place, though.

Sanity Australia $25: https://www.sanity.com.au/products/2...Remastered-The

Shipping wasn’t too bad. And they were great with keeping me posted throughout the process. I would definitely use them again.

Yes thank you Bates_Motel for that comparison. It's very fustrating for sure but not a deal breaker for me. And knowing Lynch he's a bit contradictory in his releases. Very peculiar about the sound, color timing, chapter stops, etc. but if an accident occurs, he seems to act as if it's the Unified Field at work and moves on.

BTW that Mike Figgis interview is taken directly from the UK Optimum Blu-Ray of "Inland Empire." Not sure if anyone mentioned it.

I remember taking an art class taught by his associate producer who was also an artist. We had spoken about working with David and I mentioned I had all these DVDs from overseas as I couldn't find his movies here at all. So one day, after class he asked to see the DVDs I had of Lynch's movies from Germany, France, etc. Movies like Wild at Heart (Sailor et Lulu), Lost Highway, etc. The producer just shook his head and said at the time David had no control over his films but he wanted to change that. He didn't even realize many of these had been released overseas. Then he said "Can I have these to show David?" And I handed all of them over to him.

Later he gave them all back, thanking me and said the transfers are really crappy. David really wants to work on getting his films back.

Fade or no fade. It's not a big deal to me.

Packaging
Inner print
Booklet

so this means its just a basic case and not a slipcase? I was really hoping for a nice thick textured black digibook. maybe I should just buy the 4K after all

So far every David Lynch film from Criterion has come in a Digipak, so I have to imagine this will as well.

Just confirmed with Sanity Australia that the Australian Blu of The Elephant Man is Region B locked. The case says Region A, B, C but that refers to the 4K ONLY. Have also tested on a Region A player. Throws up a region warning and refuses to play.

Coming back to the soundtrack : the film is Dolby Stereo and if I'm not mistaken, you can Dolby ProLogic the Studio Canal DTS HD MA 2.0 track to retrieve the surround part of it. However, since Criterion encoded their disc as LPCM 2.0, does LPCM can also be played through ProLogic in the same manner and be turned into a surround track too ?
I always thought it can't, but am unsure.

I've played quite a few LPCM 2.0 stereo tracks (either vintage four track stereo or Dolby Stereo) on my setup via ProLogic (specific titles such as Eureka's "Violent Saturday" and Signal One's releases of "Between Heaven and Hell", "Compulsion", and "The Sun Also Rises") and they've given the surround support/track.

Some receivers such as Denons default to playing LPCM 2.0 as forced stereo from the fronts only. But you can override that and play it as surround (or centre channel mono if it’s a dual mono rather than stereo encode).

Thanks for the answers. I have a Yamaha, which I think should do fine. It was more a question related to how LPCM can be encoded/decoded vs DTS HD MA.

Is that over HDMI or Coax?
I wouldn't run the discrete 4-tracks through the ProLogic decoder, just run it bitstream direct.

I’m not at home at the moment so I can’t double check for sure but I believe Coax (I have a Yamaha but can’t remember the specific model).

Comparing the review of the Criterion to the 4K, doesn't sound like there's really much of a drastic difference between the two. So owning the Criterion where it's just slightly inferior doesn't sound bad at all.

I just got this in the mail yesterday and yes, it is a digipak like the previous Lynch releases on Criterion.

Does it have the fade missing from the Studiocanal release?
