Most likely but that just means its not the season sets. One would hope it would be the 4:3 level set masters or something, though Hell has'nt frozen over yet.

I will say its interesting that they are using reworked artwork from the level sets and Orange Bricks.

If these are uncropped 4:3, I may get them.

P.S. U.S. music track is a must for me.

They are but the quality is still terrible.

TFS Vegeta: "How dare..."

I think I'll just stick to my amaray season sets.
They're not great TBH, but I'm so tired of being milked by the franchise. Plus, they're better than the orange brick DVDs. And let's not even mention the 30th anniversary catastrophe again..

I love most things Dragon Ball, even GT to an extent, but there has to be a cut-off point.

They're currently available to preorder on the Funimation shop as well.

The confusion and consternation in this thread is why I am frustrated with many anime distributors and publishers.

The requirements for a quality release are simple.
  • Video should be in the original aspect ratio.
  • Video receives enough bitrate to avoid obvious compression artifacts.
  • Video is not aggressively run through video processing software, and any edits to the original video, only when necessary, are done with precision and care. "Do no harm" should be the motto here.
  • Bottom line: Video remains true to the source, even if the source is terrible.
  • Audio is lossless for all languages provided.
  • Audio is provided at the highest channel distribution (Atmos > 7.1 > 5.1 > 2.0) available for all languages provided.
  • The content in general is not censored and is provided uncut.

That's it. Every publisher should be able to do this. Even if they can't afford a remaster right now, today, all publishers can and should be doing this with every release. Even if the master is awful, at least present the content as nicely as possible considering the awful source.

All of this should go triple for a flagship title like Dragon Ball Z. The stuff Funimation has done to it over the years is appalling.

I have purchased this series 3 times now. The orange brick DVDs, the bluray releases and the 30th ann edition. I can't justify it again. IF Funi announced all season steelbooks from the get go, MAYBE I could, but I don't want to risk them abandoning these releases after these 3.

I wouldn't worry, I'm confident that we will get all nine seasons. The remaster is already complete so it'snot dependent on immediate sales like the Level Sets, and despite what hardcore fans would lead you to believe, this should sell incredibly well with casual fans since it's superior to the other formats still in print (2013 Blu-rays and Orange Bricks). Say what you want about the Dragon Boxes, but casuals aren't going to drop several thousand dollars for all of it.

Was thinking of purchasing the first two level sets on ebay, but honestly I'm fine with these. It'll be the best thing until Funimation decides to give it the restoration the series deserves. And at least I know I'll be able to get all nine seasons in a cohesive set rather than trying to mix it up with Level Set 1.1 and 1.2 and the rest in Dragon Boxes or what have you. Not to mention how much they go for.

And if by chance they ended up going back and fixing whatever issues were on the 30th anniversary set to transfer onto these new steelbooks, that'll be a plus. Though I doubt that'll happen since that'd be unfair to people who bought that expensive boxset.

First time I'll be buying this series so pretty excited to re-watch in arguably the third best presentation available.

I plan on getting these as they should still be worlds better then "widescreen" releases. but feel this is the last time I'm buying Dragonball Z.

They...Funimation took the time to take the 30th anniversary discs. Put new artwork on, but not consolidate episodes?

They aren't even offering anything with the steelbooks. Yu Yu Hakusho atleast had new extras and art cards, but it's going to be 9 steelbooks. 36 discs. 4 discs per set. When this is done for DBZ. All for a higher price, and debatable quality on 4:3.

This is being released solely for anyone who just wanted DBZ in Steelbook. If you want DBZ on BD, just get the BD set on Amazon that'll cost less than this. It has the US and JP tracks and picture quality is much better than how awful the 30th anniversary attempt is at 4:3.

Funimation should start looking at Sentai on how to do a steelbook release. (Sentai's Vampire Hunter D excluded)

If Sentai were releasing these then they'd be $300 per Steelbook. Seriously Sentai's pricing for Steelbooks is insanity.

Is there an overall consensus on the 4:3 remaster? Better than the cropped release, but not as good as the level sets? If so, is it still worth an upgrade if I already have the cropped sets?

I never got the chance to watch all of DBZ. I watched the entire Saiyan Saga on the Orange Brick set. I watched other episodes here and there. A lot of my experiences with the sagas were from the video games. I was always reluctant to watch the rest of DBZ, because there was no solid video release for DBZ. The Orange Bricks are bad, the Blu Rays are bad (except the the Level Sets, but they were discontinued), and the Dragon Boxes will forever be beyond my price range...

I paid $55 for Beyond the Boundary, $30 for Vampire Hunter D, $50 for Big O, and $65 for Clannad+After Story. $65 for Elfen Lied, and $55 for No Game No Life. Funimation wants you to pay over $200 for this DBZ Steelbook run. It'll be 9 steelbooks. Out of all those Sentai ones the only 2 I felt bad about were Vampire Hunter D, and Elfen Lied.

Unlike Funimation: You get the full series with movies/OVA's (Both seasons, whereas Funi would split them), new discs, new extras, an art book, and a slipcover. I actually get an attempt for my money worth from Sentai at the very least.

Funimation took the time to actually alter their discs (Something they never do), but instead of consolidating episodes or adding anything new...they just put a new image coat on and went ahead being complacent. I'm not saying to give us it all in one steel or big release...but maybe TRY to make it shorter and be a better option than the base blu ray set that even has the same number of sets?

Look, if someone doesn't have DBZ on BD and wants it in steelbook? This is the release for you. If you just want DBZ on BD? The BD set for the whole series on Amazon is less than half the price you will pay for this steelbook set. Steelbook release takes away wide-screen, and makes a arguable quality for its 4:3...and nothing else added.

Yu Yu Hakusho (Another Funimation steelbook line) didn't have its episodes changed, but atleast gave us new interviews, and artcards for the price to make it feel like you bought something special beyond "Oooh steelbook!" So we know Funimation can be better than this.

I paid $44.99 each for these on Right Stuf Anime when they were first announced and now Season 1 is on Amazon for $43.49. That's fine as long as the price doesn't drop too much below that...

I acknowledge that the picture quality for these looks like crap, but this set and the Dragon Boxes are the two best officially-sold options, and the DBs are long out of print and even more expensive, so this is pretty much my only option of finally owning DBZ on home video. I already have DB, DBGT, and DBS, plus all the movies, so there's no point in waiting for Funimation to do a Level-set-quality release of DBZ.
