Last month, we noticed social media reports about Sacha Baron Cohen shooting something in Los Angeles as one of his most beloved characters, and today Collider can exclusively report that Borat 2 has already been shot and even screened for a select few industry types.

According to multiple sources, the sequel finds Borat thinking he’s a big movie star after the success of the original 2006 film made him famous, so he’s trying to hide from the public by pretending to be someone else, and starts meeting/interviewing people incognito. One source described the film as “Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen.”

It’s unclear who is paying for the sequel, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Borat 2 was being financed by a deep-pocketed streamer. After all, 20th Century Fox released the first film, but the Disney-owned studio is unlikely to be prioritizing R-rated comedies in the midst of the pandemic. The film was based on pre-existing IP created by Cohen, so it’s also possible that he has retained ownership over the character and is free to do with it as he pleases.

I was going to say, how are they going to make a Borat 2 if everyone already knows who he is now? But then I read plot details, and it make sense... sorta.

I read the rumours last month but thought they were a little reactionary. Cohen has been dwindling in returns with each subsequent effort and it just feels like tempting fate trying to follow up the original Borat.

But Cohen is strong enough to warrant watching this, especially if something like Netflix are quietly bankrolling it.

I can only watch a few minutes of Who Is America? at a time, most of it so wince-inducing and stomach-churning. I remember finding Ali G hilarious and Borat really funny, and it's clear that Baron Cohen is talented in continuing to create great characters, but his humor seems to have skewed almost completely into making people feel uncomfortable or awkward on camera, which is too "reality television" for me to find funny.

That said, I will probably watch this in a theater or on disc. To be honest, though, I'd be more excited for another Ali G film, especially because he may be on the verge of aging out of that role.

I never had any interest in Borat, but I'm one of the few people who loved Bruno. Saw it three times in the theater; each time, people got up and left, and didn't come back.

Very little offends me, but Bruno did the trick. And I loved it. The Blu-ray commentary is perfect.

He'd have difficulty getting permits to shoot in Staines: the local council were so embarrassed by Ali G and Da West Staines Massiv that they changed the name of the town to Staines-upon-Thames to sound more upmarket.

I never really asked for one to begin with, but if a sequel was ever going to be made, 14 years later is way too late for something no one cares about anymore.
