![]() Halloween Horror Month 2020 ![]() Welcome back, time for another Halloween Horror Month, attempting to watch 31 films in 31 days. This year has been, eh, lets say an interesting one and with the world still not back to a 'normal' state, maybe this years Horror Month will be a welcome distraction. Some will be more busy, and others less busy this year but just remember to go at your own pace. My personal aim is always 31 films in 31 days, and even as a single man that can often be a struggle. In previous years I'd often double or triple up over weekends. The 'My Movies' app is also handy as you can see at a glance your horror BDs or DVDs, but can also sort films by runtime, if you were wanting something shorter that night. If you have one of the 'Universal Monsters' sets, films from those eras are often shorter (eg. 'Dracula' & 'Frankenstein' at 75m & 70m respectively). Also despite Horror being in the title, if a film fits more with the Halloween theme, ghosts, witches etc, I think those can get a pass. ![]() I will sometimes go blu-ray only, but I think this year I'll pick from BD, DVD and streaming options. This will be my 9th year doing this, and you can see previous years complete film lists below. Last year I added the extra layer of a watching a film for every year from 1989 to 2019, ie. 31 years of horror. Was an interesting challenge but also meant I only watched a few extra films before '89. If watching some Horror films over this month sounds fun, feel free to join in. I'm going to start my month off with the 2006 horror comedy 'Slither', and I'll update the post below with the films I view throughout the month. ![]() _______________________________________ The 8 previous years film lists; 2012 [Show spoiler] 2013 [Show spoiler] 2014 [Show spoiler] 2015 [Show spoiler] 2016 [Show spoiler] 2017 [Show spoiler] 2018 [Show spoiler] 2019 [Show spoiler]

Wow, I actually managed to watch one last night / early this morning:
1. Happy Death Day ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I really enjoyed it. I had some emergency dental work on a cracked tooth so it was a very welcome distraction. Right side of my face is still pretty swollen ![]() Last edited by Ste7en; 10-04-2020 at 03:30 PM. |

Last night on Amz Prime, I watched Ghost Stories, a 2017 British portmanteau film directed by Jeremy Dyson and Andy Nyman. Being fond of the old Amicus portmanteau films, I was sufficiently intrigued to give this a shot.
The lead character Philip Goodman (Andy Nyman himself) is an academic and TV debunker of charlatans and superstitions. He one day gets a summons from his childhood idol Charles Cameron, only to find him an alcoholic recluse, scornful of his own and Goodman's work. Cameron hands Goodman a set of case dossiers and challenges him to find a rational explanation, thus setting the proceedings in motion - A night watchman at a disused asylum building who has a weird encounter, a nervous student who meets a satyr-like creature in the woods, an upmarket trader that finds poltergeist activity in his home. Eventually these lead to a more surreal conclusion where Goodman finds his own sanity slipping. The basic idea for GS is a tested one, but the film falters in the quality of the script. Too much of the eerie quotient relies on darkness, loud noises and the sudden appearance of spooky figures. It's an effect that when used repeatedly gets tired fast. The concluding surreal bits are nicely done, but the sudden dump of a moral lesson for Goodman (for his past actions / inaction) has a forced quality and the end is nothing as forceful as the makers would like to think it is. The acting is of a good standard, and it's short enough at 90min odd, with snazzy production design and lovingly graded visuals, but it falls short in freshness and entertainment value. |

Last night (after midnight, so it's legit 100%
![]() ![]() It's a moody horror film, set mostly in an isolated cabin in the woods, where a family is fortified there, after a deadly virus (sounds familiar these days?) is pushing mankind towards its demise. The first hour was pretty interesting and had me on the edge, but the rest of it, up until the end, was pretty disappointing. |

I don't often watch horror films, so I'm willing to try and see if I can get through October playing this game.
Will be watching In Fabric before bed tonight, and though it doesn't count it just so happen I watched Vampyr yesterday, a great way to start this streak ! ![]() ![]() Day two, I got woken up early by my cat and watched Suspiria in bed to kick off the day, programmed scare for tonight is Dark Water, a film I've never seen. ![]() ![]() Day three, The Brood and Edgar Allan Poe marathon (all first viewing) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Day four, took a break from watching pinku eiga all day and turned my attention towards Arrow's After Midnight (might watch the bonus feature, The Battery, later today). ![]() ![]() Inbetween day four and five : giallo all nighter ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Day five : ![]() ![]() ![]() Day six : not quite an all-nighter this time, because II do need some sleep eventually, but a second giallo marathon starting this afternoon ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Day seven : not exactly horror, at least not in a classical sense, but avant-garde films with horror themes ![]() ![]() Day eight : ![]() Day nine : Bava marathon part one ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by thuata; 10-09-2020 at 10:14 AM. |

I started the month watching Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) on Eureka disc twice in a row (a few hours apart), first the theatrical version and then the re-arranged version (included as an easter egg). Never been a big fan of the film before but the re-arranged version was a revelation.
![]() Then the second (or the third) film was Caltiki the Immortal Monster (1959). What Mario Bava achieved with a limited budget never fails to amaze me. Caltiki is just a bundle of rags for sure, but still a menacing, worthy cousin of the Blob. (Perhaps I love Caltiki more because it's a rag!) ![]() |

I know, right? I saw it at a film festival screening a few years ago and was disappointed that I had missed The Florida Project in favor of this one. I also saw In Fabric at the same festival, which again was a mixed experience for me, in contrast to Strickland's previous films, which I loved.
