Default Optiarc BD-5500S in Sony VGN-NS190J No Disc Found?

First off, letme say hello and how much I love using this site to keep up to date on Blu-Ray releases and reviews. Unfortunetly my first post here is a problem...

I got a Vaio laptop back around Christmas. The thing worked great until windows decided to die a week later. I reformatted with Vista Ultimate 64-Bit and I have not been able to get the Blu-Ray drive to work! It worked previously on Vista Home Premium Edition (Watched Dark Knight and Resident Evil Degeneration). I have yet to find a fix for it, and even contacted Sony support and they did not give me an answer. The drive plays and recognizes everything but Blu-Rays. When I put a Blu-Ray in the drive it spins for a bit then nothing happens. I tried using WinDVD, PowerDVD, AnyDVD, and various codec packs and nothing works. When I look at the drive in My Computer Windows does recognize that it is indeed a BD Drive, but will not read them. It just ejects the disc and says "Please insert disc". I cannot find a fix anywhere and I hope someone can help. I've been searching the internet and found most people have the same drive but other problems and it's generally with HP's. Things I have tried were...

Flashing Drive Firmware
Deleting lower/upper registry filers
Installing various Blu-Ray playback programs and codecs
Updating to Windows 7 Beta

Still, I have nothing...I really hope there is a fix to this, I hate having the player yet I have no way to use it...

The one program that you haven't mentioned yet (surprisingly) is TMT3. It has very proven Vista playback. Try it out for free at www.arcsoft.com

Check device manager to make sure the correct driver is installed. Also when you place any Blu-ray pre-recorded title in a BD-ROM drive on any windows PC and go to "Computer" you should see the BD title and the amount of GB for that title.

If your BD-ROM drive is not reading Blu-ray discs at all then nothing will appear in the "computer" section in windows. If device manager shows the correct driver name and latest driver version working properly then it is not a windows software issue with the driver. Some Blu-ray laser mechanism go bad with computer BD-ROM drives. If you can play audio CD's and DVD's but windows does not see Blu-ray titles then either you have the wrong windows driver installed or the BD-ROM drive is defective.

Now when one places a Blu-ray movie in the BD-ROM drive and the title and GB size shows up in "computer" section under a windows operating system then you know the drive is working fine along with the windows driver. The next step is to install a dedicated Blu-ray software player in order to play the movie.

I had to replace a BD-ROM drive once in someones Notebook computer since the drive would only play CD's and DVD's. Some of those earlier BD-ROM drives would go bad for the Blu-ray section.

Default Similar problem over here

I have a similar problem with my Samsung SH-B083L drive. It reads CDs and DVDs fine, and it even reads 'older' blu-rays like the Dark Knight which I just bought to test the drive. The first blu-Ray I tried was Tropic Thunder and The drive could not read the disc, I got "no disc in drive E:" message. Help?

Default Optiarc BC 5500s Software upgrade fix

I have a Sony Vaio VGN NS 190j model. I too was having problems with the Blu-ray player not reconizing the BD disk in the computer. althought the cd/dvd worked fine the problem was in the Sony software with WinDvd not properly loaded in sequence. The following links in this order will fix your problems. Be sure to load oldest version first then the second one.
WinDvd Filename :

Note* after this install the BD disk became reconized. it take a few mommets after clicking the app. for the BD to start playing.

prior to all this I tried all the codecs and BD players that didn't work.It would just sit and spin with no ID, this software did it.

what graphic card are you using? have you updated the drivers?
do note that bd playback will not work with almost all beta gpu drivers.

My first guess is that if it reads one format but not the other is that the laser/diode may not be working properly. However I'd make sure to see if you can find any firmware and/or driver updates and give those a try first.

I uninstalled cyberlink player and re-installed it and it read the disc but i'm afraid to take it out in case it will stop reading them again.

right now no video player is in on my windows 7 yet it still won't show up on the drive in my computer. I can dvds easily. maybe my cdrom.sys driver is corrupt or bad or something because it never lets me do it. I am going to download cyberlink like you did though.

And of course with my luck now it doesn't play dvds or cds too. It stopped playing all things. It makes the noise like the laser is working and then that is it nothing else.

FACT: WinDVD9 does NOT play Blu-Ray discs under Windows 7 64-bit, ONLY the 32-bit version. It reports 'no disc in drive' or something similar. However, it does recognise non Blu-Ray DVDs
FACT: WinDVD10 DOES play Blu-Ray discs under Windows 7 64-bit.
SOLUTION: Upgrade from 9 to 10.

If you have an ASUS 64-bit laptop which came with an oem installation of WinDVD9 (like mine), contact ASUS or the people you bought it from and get ASUS to pay for the upgrade. They did it for me. (I bought mine through Laptops Direct who passed the problem onto their rep at ASUS who sent me a full version of WinDVD 10.)

That's some pretty sweet customer service from ASUS.

Sorry for reviving this old thread, but I recently experienced this issue and I just wanted to thank you as this explanation helped me figure out what was going on!

I would like to add/adjust some steps to your fix. If you are having this issue, you can uninstall WinDVD and then use the VAIO recovery center to reinstall the program. You can then simply run the VAIO Update software and that will install all of the patches in the correct sequence. Whilst these updates won't ask for a reboot, I did need to perform one in order for the drive to recognise discs again. These are the steps I did and it worked a treat

It seems you must keep WinDVD installed for this drive to work as a Blu-ray reader!
