Default Fox plans potential X-Men Origins movie..I mean EARLY Origins...

Quote:
It’s been a few months since we’ve heard anything about X-Men: First Class, the young X-Men movie which is supposed to be happening at Fox. Comicx Continuum caught up with producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who told them what’s up.

The plan is to start them out as kids, follow them as they grow, and eventually have the franchise populated with adults. It actually sounds a lot like Harry Potter with mutants, and maybe that’s not a bad idea. The first movie will start out at the Marvel universe’s version of Hogwarts. Donner says, “It is the first class of Xavier's school, way back when, so it's young Scott, young Jean, young Beast and that'll be really fun.” And from there, they’ll grow up. “I think (the plan) is to follow some of the characters into their own stories, and weave them back into the X-Men world.”

Yeesh, really?

I don't see any reason to complain about this. People groaned about the possibility of a Wolverine movie, too - and it looks really good.

hey i'm definitely withholding final judgment until i see a trailer, but my initial reaction is kind of "bleh." Also, Wolverine looks really good to some people, but to others it may not (for the record i think the action looks really cool and getting Hugh Jackman back was a huge leap in the right direction...we'll see how it turns out )

If it would have taken place after X3 following the younger mutants from that movie, then it would have sounded lame. Going with a prequel and focusing on the starting team from the comics sounds like a great idea. It could fix some of the mistakes and bad taste of X3 and become another trilogy of films. But...and this is a big but...Fox is still producing these films so it's just wishful thinking in believing Fox could do the film justice.

lol

Looks aren't all there is to a film. Even an action film falls apart despite strong action sequences if the plot and story isn't there to back it up. This Wolverine picture has great action and such, but the plot makes no sense.

And yeah, as long as Fox is behind this stuff I can't get excited about it. Hopefully they won't screw it up too bad though.

Indeed. X-men has become Fox's next 'squeeze every dollar out of the fan before it becomes unprofitable' franchise.

I don't understand all this crapping on FOX. Sure they have had their share stinkers, but what movie studio hasn't? FOX has been involved in plenty of great movies, too. Just from 1990 on they have had their hands in three Die Hard films, Speed, Independence Day, Man on Fire, Fight Club, Death Sentence, Walk The Line, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Cast Away, Jumper, Master & Commander, Moulin Rouge, and a 24 movie - and that's off the top of my head. Sure, not all Oscar contenders, but they were all fun and I enjoyed them. Not to mention three good X-Men films - yes I liked the third. Whatever problems they have fall just at much in Marvel's lap.

I think people should say, the Fox the past few years has been kind of lackluster. The executives at Fox have tried to micro-manage their films and succeeded in botching a good percentage of them. There have been a few exceptions but when it comes to their comic book films they tend to short change them in development.

I agree with that. I just think a lot of people (myself included) sometimes have very short memories.

I just have a disdain for the way they handle comic book adaptations. Their travesties in their Dragon Ball and Wolverine pictures were the last straw. Even their most entertaining comic adaptions (i.e., the first two X-men films) function best when one ignores the source material.

Outside of comic adaptations, I have minimal gripes against the quality of the films they've put out.

i believe they are waiting to see how well Wolverine performs before they do any more origin movies, including Wolverine 2 (yes, that's being planned too )

I concede that, because you guys may be right. I don't agree with the opinion, but I can see where you are coming from. I love comic book movies, but I have never really been into the actual comics. I don't look at them with the critical eye that comic lovers usually do. I loved the 3rd X-Men film. I haven't actually met a person who didn't like it, but I can find people online who hate it. With myself, some changes are ok. I eat and breath Superman. That's the one comic I have read most of. I love the cartoon, love the original movies - even the crappy 4th one. I love Superman Returns - even the parts with his kid. I guess my point is that I will like it if it entertains me.

1) completely agree...i'm entertained by many comic book movies even tho i never read them as a kid. i suspect i'll be entertained by Wolverine or this new "kids" movie more than i'll actually enjoy it, if that makes sense

2) me too! i really enjoyed Superman Returns for what it was trying to be. the 4th...not so much but it was good to have all the original cast show up

I think something like this would serve better as a TV series..start off the series as when they are young and as the season's and series progress they grow up...just my 2 cents.

I guess your threshold for modified things is just higher than mine.

For example, I don't mind Spider-man having organic webbing, but I don't like Sandman being revealed as the killer of Uncle Ben.

Some things are OK to change, but others are not. Too often the films take samples of the characters and bend them into situations that aren't right at all. Strict aherence to existing literature isn't necessary as proven by Nolan's Batman films, but they just need to be careful about exactly how much source material shows through their original ideas.

ps Moefiz, I agree. Actually, you might not know this, but they almost did a TV show called "Generation X". Had a smattering of existing X-men characters with some new original ones. I'm not really familiar with it at all, but it looks like most of the X-men were missing, including Prof. X himself. But if they did do a X-men show like that, it'd just end up playing like a Smallville rip-off I think.

I might agree with that, but then there would be a 50/50 chance of FOX doing one of two things:

1) canceling it mid-season or 2) canceling it right after it really gets good.

That is my only problem with FOX ... they are so random about what shows stay around and what shows get the boot.
