You probably want to give us a ballpark figure before we can help. "Willing to shell out enough to get a good system" will mean wildly different things to different people.

go 5.1 an look at the new onkyo packages they are very good for the money

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Systems&p=i

the 7.1 system is a bit more might be worth it

http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Systems&p=i

my pick would be this one for the True HD and DTS audio

try that, it will do all the new codecs and it's a 7.1.

Try this

Energy Take 5.1 $399
Onkyo 606 AVR $397

Don't forget to get speaker wire and HDMI cables, try Monoprice.com.

OF COURSE, you could always just build a system a little slower and get bigger and better speakers and just start off with a 2.1, or 3.0 and then add as you go...

Unfortunatly this is often the case because people(myself included) are incapable of taking their time with anything. I learned the hard way of getting something fast, and then 1 year later did it again the right way.

People need to experience this for themselves. Think about how many people start threads on the speaker discussion about getting out of systems like these into something more.

You are so right ! If I new then what I know now . As far as QUALITY OF SOUND ~ I would have started with A receiver & 1 speaker if that is what it took to get to where I am today!!!!!!!!

yeah, I would have gone 2.0 with a receiver and worked my way up to a 3.0, then 3.1, then 5.1.

When I went shopping for replacements of the Sonys I had, I was only going to get a 3.0. I was fortunate that CC was going out of business cause thats when the Wife gave me the OK to shop for new speakers if it was a deal, they had the Bostons there, but only 1, and 1 TSI300. I went to the local Energy dealer and was in love with them, I got lucky that Energy decided to discontinue the "C" line at the time I had WAF on upgrading, and I got everything for less then the 3.0 was gonna cost. Plus it pleased the wife I sold the Sony's.

OH, yeah your right, it is the HTIB thread. It is also where people first start with getting a system and then realize they aren't fully satisfied and want something more, they want the Theater experience, and HTiB isn't getting that for them. Perhaps we could change the Title of this discussion forum to PSSiB (Partial Surround Sound in a Box).

CrazyBlue and I were part of that group and we just don't want people to get instant upgraditist. I upgrade 3 times in 3 years... Now I won't need to for about 5-10.

that's how people learn. The onkyo systems that can do hd codecs are upgradeable. No need for some to spend years building their system if they aren't an audiophile at heart.
