Hi, was looking to get a new pair of headphones for PS5, but I don’t want the Sony Pulse set as I’m sure there are better options out there. Also I’m not looking for those headsets with mics built in, only interested in quality audio. Budget around $180. I know Sony will tout “Tuned for 3D audio”, but I’m guessing that’s mostly marketing bs.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks. |

My personal suggestion would be to wait and see what reviews of existing headsets with a PS5 review end up saying as there's not a lot out there and new headsets will also release down the line to further take advantage of PS5.
You could potentially with that high a budget plump for a headset and Audio DAC which should theoretically take advantage of the extra 3D audio capabilities of the PS5 cause of the Tempest engine. |

I was wondering about this, holding off for now until there's some real world use of a PS5 with a few different headsets. Or I'll just get that Sony one.
I really want PS5 3D sound to work with a sound bar properly, though.. I have some doubts on that at the moment owing to the lack of Atmos game support, and given all 7.1 audio bars are basically looking for Atmos these days... hopefully they'll begin talking about how their 3D tech is going to work with hardware other than headphones at some point. |

Well I pulled the trigger on the SteelSeries Arctis 7P after reading a couple review comparisons against Sony 3D Pulse. Build Quality, Comfort and 2D audio seems to be superior on the 7P, but obviously no 3D audio comparisons yet. Regardless, Pulse is still sold out and 7P wasn’t and I needed something when the PS5 launches next week.

I have been using the Pulse 3D Headset for the past few days. The Sony Platinum’s Sound better when obviously used on a PS4. But.. that might change on PS5. The people who have heard the Tempest 3D Audio tech can’t share their thoughts on it until tomorrow because of Sony embargo. |

But then when the claim is that every headset can get 3D audio just by being plugged into the DualSense or PS5, it completely throws me off. There's got to be a tangible audio quality difference on a headset merely powered by a DualSense controller and one that has far more power draw from a USB port. Time will tell i guess.

I didn’t know The Last of Us 2 doesn’t support 3D Audio. While I was testing a few games, I thought for sure that game had it. It uses 7.1 VSS. Only game on my SSD that I could Test was Ghost of Tsushima. Doesn’t matter what headset is in use, that audio signal is output in 3D. Platinum sounded better than Pulse. Pulse sounded better than Sennheiser. I need to test a 3D Audio PS5 game on a PS5 System before the final verdict. |

I've tested lots of headphones in the past: Gold, Platinums, Astro A50 Gen 3,4, Steelseries Arctis Pro, Hyper X Cloud 2, Hyper X Cloud Alpha. None of them came close to the quality of plugging my BeyerDynamics DT 770 Headphones directly in my Harman Kardon Receiver which does the "Dolby:Headphone" virtual surround (same as the tech in the Astro A50s). Every other options just sound really flat to me.
I'm not sure what will be my best option for the PS5. Plugging my BeyerDynamics directly in the Dualsense will probaby not drive enough power. But I,m not sure the Tempest thing can go through the HDMI and optical passthrough of my TV and then to the receiver. If it does, I assume I would need to disable the Dolby Headphone processing from the receiver? |

Also to note, the USB dongle for Arctic’s cover up both the USB-C & USB-A port because of its shape. |

The Steelseries Arctis 7p are really good headphones. As far as I'm aware they're the only cans other than Pulse that officially use the Sony Tempest 3D tech. I couldn't get Pulse anywhere so I paid the extra for these. It was an easy decision, as I have a freakishly large head and appreciate the extra comfort. Build quality is nice, with metal components and very soft pads. 3D audio can be customised in settings, and the PS5 recognises and displays the brand and model in the settings menu.
I can confirm you get at least 24 hrs gaming from a single charge, and the dongle can be attached to a USB-A to USB-C extender cable (supplied) so if you want to keep the front ports free, you could run the cable around from one of the rear USB ports instead. Sound is immersive and nicely directional, but I have found that I need the volume close to maximum to be loud enough, so no wiggle room there. It is loud enough on max, but I'm used to maximum volume on headphones being unbearable, so these do run a little quiet. But like I said, maximum is as loud as most would want to go anyway. Astros Playroom seemed louder and punchier than Miles Morales though, so I probably need to test out more games to get a better sample of volume. (I did have PS5 volume at max and in-game audio at max too). But yep, really nice surround effects, great build quality, comfortable for large headed types, and last for ages before recharging. I'm very happy with them. |

Yesterday I tried the Arctis 7P and felt they were pretty good.
But only Demon Souls made an impression on me and would warrant buying them and not keep my current setup (which is basically using Virtual Surround Sound with a DAC and studio Beyer Dynamic headphones). All the other games sounded pretty muddled with the 3D sound (both spider-Man, Battlefield 1 and 5, Call of Duty Cold War). |

Make sure to go into settings & turn off 3D Audio. If you don’t, you’ll get massive Bass boost & 0 directional sound. Only turn on 3D Audio if you are playing a PS5 game. I’m still using the Pulse 3D Headset. It’s nice to know there is Arctis 7P as an option but I’ve heard many times over you have to crank up the volume. You don’t need to do that at all with Pulse. I’m hearing good things though about comfort from them. Doubt they’d be better comfort wise than my Sennheiser’s but at least they support PS5 3D & it’s nice to hear battery life is better than Pulse. |

I’m thinking about getting the Arctic 7x. The 7p doesn’t work on Xbox, but the 7x will work on both (the chat/game audio balance wheel only works on Xbox though). 3D audio works from what’ve I’ve read (https://www.reddit.com/r/steelseries...tm_name=iossmf)
I was going to stick with my Sony Golds, but they don’t work with Xbox (dongle isn’t supported). 7x seems like a good option as I can just toggle through chat/audio balance in party settings on PS5 and it will work with my Xbox, Switch (docked and portable). I could always keep my Golds for Pas5 and use the Arctis for everything else of thr lack of balance toggle bugs me too much. Not like used Golds sell for much. Seem to be sold out everywhere so I’ll just use headphones plugged into my Xbox controller for now. Last edited by dmaul1114; 12-01-2020 at 02:32 PM. |
