They may have been displayed before, but this was the first time I have seen them, and it was in real life, so not only does that make me cool today, it means I can give an honest opinion on here about what it was like. It was friggen awesome!!! Seriously, it makes watching 2D HDTV look really boring. I believe it was using Real-D technology. They also displayed a 3.8K resolution TV, and I have to say, it didn't look nearly as cool as the 3D. I don't know what resolution the 3D TV was at, I didn't ask. But when TVs can display 4K/60p with Real-D 3D.... that would be pretty cool.

Sweet! It's great to finally hear from someone who witnessed it first hand. I've been excited about 3-D ever since it was announced that blu-ray, PS3 and xbox360 are adapting to it, but also because the recent 3-D movies out now in theaters are stunning.
So, divulge us some more, please!! Was there any blurring or ghosting? How does it compare to the theaters like the IMAX or RealD stuff? Is it just as good? |

In all honesty I have been skeptical of 3D in the past, I hadn't seen any recent Real-D in the cinemas, but the glasses the Sony tech guy handed out, said "Real-D" on them. I saw no blurring (like I did at M&M World today), it was crystal clear, and the colors were exceptional, vibrant and accurate. I just asked my wife her opinion, and she also said it looked at least as good as watching any regular High Definition video on a decent TV (like Blu-ray), just in 3D.
When I told my father about the experience, he asked me if I noticed a brightness drop from putting on the glasses. My answer to that was that I didn't notice it, and I haven't been back since Monday to actually look for that happening while watching it. If I get a chance to drop past tomorrow morning before I leave Vegas, I will. But if the brightness does drop, it certainly wasn't noticeable while not looking for that to occur. |

That's what it said about the LCD panel "3.8K Monitor". If I get back there in the morning, i will ask someone to clarify it. The problem is, most of those Sony guys don't speak English very well. It could be like HDTV was a few years ago, it will "accept" the 4K signal, but they don't have an actual display of 4096x2160. Another theory I have, is it could be that it holds the 2160 vertical, but is a 16:9 ratio screen with square pixels, which gives a horizontal resolution of 3845. (3.8K). I would say this is the likely scenario because I believe it was a 16:9 TV.

Thanks for the info, Chevy, you've made my day! You told me everything I was hoping to hear.
Like you, I've actually been very skeptical about 3-D, that is until I saw Monsters vs. Aliens in IMAX 3-D. I'm now a firm believer and I don't feel like I can praise the new tech enough. It's really that good. Real D is the real deal. Goodbye, crappy 3-D of the past! Hello to the future! |

I am back at NAB
The 3.8k tv is 3840x2160. It looks friggen impressive now i am giving it more attention I am guessing the 3d tv is 1080p it now looks pixelated in comparison to 3.8k. I noticed a drop in brightness from putting on 3D glasses, but enhanced black levels. I am told it is backward 2D compatible. Brightness and contrast could easily be calibrated for 3D glasses. The next interface which will support 60fps progressive, 3D and 4K is "3G" but i dont know if it can do all 3 at once. There was also a twin-lens Panasonic 3D camcorder mock-up. Very cool! |

I just want a release date on one of these things already. I am "trying" to hold out for a nice 3D unit because I know that if I go and buy something now, I'll just be kicking myself (or my wife will) later. Having seen both Journey to the Center of the Earth and Monsters vs. Aliens, I too have found the technology to be something worth investing in. I think a nice 65" 3D TV would be great for my room size.

I don't know if you are interested in this much of it, but a lady at Sony showed me some 3D workflow. The already-existing broadcast format HDCAM-SR can record in 1080p 4:4:4, or it can record two tracks of 1080p video in 4:2:2. She used one track for left-eye channel and the second track for the right eye. Her monitoring process allowed her to see either left or right at a time, and another monitor plugged in to the Avid 3D software combined the two. Which then looked blurry. She said they hooked the 3D monitor in to it and it worked great, but they only left a normal 2D screen, which allowed you to at least see the framing, even if it did look blurry.
I guess nobody knows when it is coming, but rest assured... it IS coming! I guess format standards need to be agreed upon before they push the technology too far. |
