Default Recommendations for Players w/ Opt Audio

As the title states, I’m looking for a player that has an optical/toslink output. The receiver I would need to hook it up to only has optical as a surround sound option, so HDMI and coaxial ports wouldn’t be useful (I’ve tried converters but they haven’t worked and switching a/v equipment isn’t an option). However the video output isn’t capable of 4K so a UHD player wouldn’t be needed, unless of course it would be cost effective.

I’ve checked my local big box stores and they only options I could find were out of my price range since they were higher end UHD models. Any help on model recommendations that are still obtainable would be greatly appreciated.

I hate to say it, but you are out of luck when it comes to finding a cheap blu-ray player that has an optical output port. The only players I have seen that would work would be the Panasonic 420 or the LG UBK80. Both are still on the expensive side, but are the cheapest players that carry an optical cable port. Otherwise, you may need to look into older models or just get yourself a new AV receiver. Some are super cheap right now!

I haven't seen a model with optical in a LOOOOOOOOOONG time. Coaxial is what most seemed to have for dedicated digital output. You might get lucky poking around a pawn shop or thrift store for old players. I have picked up a pile of old Samsung and Sony models at the local stores.

Is your receiver that valuable to retain that it shouldn't be replaced? Seems like if you need to spend $1K to get a player that has a optical output, you would be better served going to a previous year on sale AVR model that is 4k capable (passthrough).

Have to assume you are using a 2006 or earlier model. Example Denon 2807 model used HDMI 1.1. (May 2006)

The receiver I’m using is owned by the company I work for and I don’t have the authority (nor would they be willing to spend the money) on replacing the equipment so I have to work with what I have. It’s a Dolby CP 750.

I’ll most likely go with another UHD player (either the LG UBK80 or Panasonic DP-UB420) if I can’t find any older BD players locally. I’d prefer to keep the price low if I can find a deal on an old one, but I wouldn’t mind having another UHD player as a backup.

I wasn’t expecting that 2009 example.
Note any used Oppo player has a optical output if by chance find one for private sale locally, but yeah all these current consumer UHD BD players including less discussed TEAC’s Tascam BD-MP4K or blu-ray BD-MP1 only if lucky provide coax out. So something like a Xantech XT-DIG-11 converter in conjunction with a Sony X800M2 ($219) that has a coax output maybe. That player and adapter are at Crutchfield as one example.
