My Two Front Speakers Have No Sound?

Hey guys thanks for all your help in advance. I just got the Onkyo HT s7100, with a PS3 for Blu's. I currently just want to used the two fronts, center, and sub. I read directions and feel as though I connected everything right but only the sub and center is producing sound. Why can't I hear anything out of the two fronts? People use this set up sometimes right? It most likely is a TV or reciever setting that is not right, any ideas? Thanks, audio virgin here...be gentle.

Assuming you're not watching a monaural audio track....... I'd say it's likely the receiver settings. There should be a menu with options for # of speakers, distance, etc.... I'm not familiar with that model, so hopefully someone has more detailed advice.

Can you run a test-tone setup?

I go to Speaker Level calibration and the center and sub are the only ones making sound? They are all set to 0.0db.

• Check all wires and cables on the back of the receiver and the speakers. Make sure they are connected properly.
• Play some FM music. Do you hear anything from your fronts? If the answer is yes, it means you probably have a connection or setup problem between PS3 and the receiver.
• If you are using an HDMI cable, make sure the PS3 is properly set for HDMI output.
• In the PS3's menu, make sure the audio output is set to Automatic.
• In PS3's menu, turn the dynamic range to off.
• In PS3's menu, set the audio output to PCM.
• In the receiver's menu, make sure the front speakers, center, and sub are set to YES and the surround speakers are set to NO.
• In the receiver's menu, make sure, the input for the PS3 and the type of cable that connects them are set properly.
• In the receiver's menu, make sure the receiver is set properly for the type of codec you are using. In most cases, you set it to STANDARD or DIRECT.

sounds like you either don't have the speakers connected properly or at all or you have the speakers connected onto the "B" fronts and your are using the "A" fronts or you have the fronts connected to a zone. try checking those. If you have access to the back of your receiver, take a picture with a digital camera and post it into this thread so we can see what you see.

i just looked at the rear view of the receiver that came with the HT s7100. there is no "A-B" speaker connections, there is a zone 2 but it would be hard to mistake that given the look of the unit. make sure that on all of your speaker connections on the receiver end, all of the black terminals are - (negative) and should go to the negative terminal on the speakers and the other terminals are red and those are + (positive) and should go out to the positive terminal on the speakers. the standard color scheme for the 5 or 7.1 on your system has a ring around each of the positive terminals to desinate front L&R (red & white ring), center (green ring), surround L&R (blue & grey ring), surround back L&R (brown & beige ring)
make sure they are all connected as they should be

I just looked at your quick hook-up diagram for your HTIB and all of the speaker wires that came with it follow the color code I gave above so it should be easy to check on your connections. I'm reading your manual now.

I really appreciate all your help, this is so frustrating...but I know It's just a connection thing and It can be fixed soon enough. I'll check the connections again.

check your quick hookup diagram, i downloade it and your manual

also check to make sure you have exposed copper conductor under those terminals, if your are clamped down onto insulation and not copper you will not get any signal to the speakers. check your terminal connections. I can see from your quick connect hook-up that you have bare wires, if that is correct then check to make sure you have copper showing on both ends and non touching the body of the receiver. also make sure your not clamped down onto insulation!

Looks right...My center is green positive and black negitive, and it works fine. The front left is white positive black neg and front right is red positive black neg. It has to be a reciever setting, PS3, or TV. Maybe I'll take the wires out and readjust them again, maybe they weren't in right?

i really think that your not making contact with the copper under the terminals for the fronts; i think you are clamping down onto insulation. take those speaker wires out and put them back in this time check that you have exposed conductors under the terminals and not the insulation that covers them before you tighten them down. and check them after tightening them down too.

it won't be any tv settings since your sound is coming from the HTIB and your PS3 should be set to LPCM out via HDMI which should still have nothing to do with the results of your system tone-test and your not hearing anything from the fronts

Great sound from the center and sub, connected the same way as the two fronts but nothing coming out??? It's going to be a long night...

did you do the automatic speaker setup using the mic with the Audyesey feature, if your speakers are connected correctly you will see it tell you that you have a front L&R, center and sub and if you don't have the other speakers set up it will not show them. i'm gonna stay with you on this tonight but you've got to check this page and update it quickly so we can move to the next step, time is ticking!

You are so very nice, but I have given up for now. No I didn't try the automatic speaker set up yet. I'm in a very tiny room and just wanted to set up fronts, sub, and center to see how it sounds and operates before May 1st when I move into my new apt. You guys in here really are great, thank you all. I bought banana plugs that I haven't tried yet either. I don't remember it being this hard a few years back. Oh, the speakers I'm using for fronts are the pre wired ones with the stands. I just hope the HTIB isn't broke, it's a week old.

sounds like a setting i hav an onkyo receiver that has some similar settings so maybe we'll give it a shot tomorrow. send me a private message tomorrow so we can get started again. I should be online by about 8pm or so if not earlier. we will get you going!
