Default Networking Cables

i didnt know what other forum to put this in, so sorry if this is the wrong one. im in the middle of finishing my HT and i need to buy new ethernet cables for my ps3 and my 360. are Cat5e cables the same thing as ethernet?? also, i need some sort of staples or something to run these along my baseboard, so they are not very noticeable. any suggestions??

Cat6 will work with any network and device.

as the clamps...

they look like this

http://www.goodmart.com/products/83586.htm

....and come in different size....I would check out a local Home depot or a fry's electronics if you have out there in your area.....they are usually around 2.00 to 10.00 a box of 25 or 50....

is it possible to tuck the wire under the base board as not to accidentally staple through the wire?

under the base board is esthetically nicer if it is an option. if you are going the staple route then just be careful not to push the stapler hard against the wire when you staple. it can crush or cut into the wire.

if you go under the base board watch out for those tac strips. they will poke holes in the wire easily.

well...take a pencil or pen and see if it will fit in the space between the bottom of the base board and the carpet. pencils are roughly the same size as alot of wires. if the base board was installed to close to the floor than its a no go. another trick is to pull the carpet out from under the base board, put the wire in the small space between the tac strip the floor and the baseboard, then tuck the carpet back in. this can be difficult as you dont want to pull the carpet off the tac strip. those clips are nice but will put holes in the baseboard. they just hammer in. they do make double wire clips or you can do one the zip tie the second.

Cat 5e will work just fine for this application. Going forward for devices that haven't been created yet you may want Cat 6 in the wall. That said, my son's xBox 360 is wired with Cat 3 that was put in the wall / attic 10 or so years ago and it streams netflix movies just fine!

here is a question i just thought of...

i have cable running through the ceiling and down the wall from my router which is 2 rooms over. im not sure what cable we used because it was done like 4 years ago. would it matter if there is cat5 cable in the wall and then cat6 cable from the wall to the ps3? in other words does the cable in the wall need to match the cable outside??

The only benefit for going with Cat6 is if you have a potential 10Gig network -- not currently supported in residential quality equipment. Most residential networks do not need anything above a Cat5/5e grade wire since they both support 10Mbps/100Mbps/Gig-E networks (although Cat5 may not be suitable for Gig-E). They all use 8 wires with an RJ-45 end.

The downside with Cat6 is the stiffness. If you need to bend it, you may find that you don't have enough room. Problem locations are usually between a device and wall or within a wall cavity.

The main difference between Cat 5 and Cat5e is the number of twists per inch. This helps reduce cross-talk and makes it a more reliable cable.

The last thing, which should not be an issue in most homes, is the 300ft (100m) distance limitation of Ethernet cables.

In summary, cat5e is the cable of choice that I would recommend to most home owners looking to wire a home Local Area Network (LAN).

Good luck!

I have a question regarding cat5 & 6 cabling. Would I be safe to assume cat6 cable is similar in difference between 12 vs 16 gauge speaker wire? Meaning, it's a thicker wire suited for longer runs. Let's say runs over 25ft or so. And under 25ft cat5 cable would be best. Am I correct in this assumption?

only two of the four pairs in the cat5 are being used for data transfer as long as you have them crimped down into the rj45 correctly.

here is my situation...

i used to have the cables go directly into the wall through a cat5 wall plate which used to be right behind my tv. since i moved my tv about 10 feet away from that spot, i was just gonna run the cables along the baseboard. now im starting to think that it might be just as easy to unplug that wall plate and pull it back up the wall, then fish it down to where my tv is now and make a whole new wall plate. we have drop ceiling so it would be easy to access the cable. what do you guys think?
