[Show spoiler]Did not like the death of the protagonist so early in the movie along with Nerd Cop becomes Super Cop.
Other than that - great movie.

I've never seen this movie and it's been on my list of need to watch for a long time. I can never find it streaming anywhere and the discs are high priced for a blind buy. I really like Friedkin's other movies (The French Connection, Sorcerer). It sounds like my kind of movie. Should I just go ahead and buy it?

My recommendation is to just blind buy the blu ray (SF or Arrow release)! One of the greatest cop thrillers ever made AFAIC.

My favorite movie from the 80's. Always somewhere in my top 10 of all time list.

Cynical, brutal, stylish. Great soundtrack by Wang Chung. One of the best cop thrillers IMO.

Playing devil's advocate here--I love Friedkin [The Exorcist is my favorite movie of all time and I love most of his other work] and this is definitely worth your time. But I watched it for the first time this past year in over twenty years, and it was much, much better in my memory. IMO, direction and script are a bit uneven and it falls a little flat in the end, though it takes some fantastic turns and features one or two really spectacular sequences. And if you buy it today, you can Wang Chung tonight! (I'm a fan of the music and soundtrack, though it's not to everyone's taste.)

I think Michael Mann actually unsuccessfully sued Friedkin for "stealing" his movie style, if that's any indication of what the movie is like.

There's a region B disc that's very affordable, but I think it's locked to that region. I really need to get a region free player for many reasons.

I have the old MGM BD, which is OK but not great. Would be great if Arrow made a UHD release (given that they already did a 4K restoration for their BD). This movie would benefit from good grain reproduction.

So weird that some of the most loved movies are the hardest to get. I can't be the only person wanting this.

It went out of print in August. That’s why the US is pricey. But a Region Free player will be the best and worst thing you can get. So many more releases. So much more money.

It's the 1970's cynicism and nihilism with the 1980's sleekness and kineticism. My personal favorite of Friedkin's, though Killer Joe comes close ; I'm surprised Peterson didn't become a bigger star on the basis of this and Manhunter the following year.

Love Killer Joe. I think you and I might be in the minority on that one.

Love the ending, "original recipe or extra crispy"

One Hollywood legend holds that Michael Mann sued William Friedkin for plagiarism over 'To Live and Die in L.A.' He accused Friedkin of stealing the entire concept of Miami Vice (1984) and lost the lawsuit. However, William Friedkin himself has said, "Michael Mann and I have been good friends for 30 years.... nothing like this ever happened."
Mann also considered Friedkin for the role of Lecktor in Manhunter the following year. No way that rumor's anything more than a rumor.

TLADILA is definitely great though... and Mann-ish... but probably Friedkin's closest film to The French Connection as well.

No joke... after seeing it in the cinema, I went straight to KFC... Hey, I really was hungry by that point.

Ok I think I’m willing to roll the dice on a blind buy but before I do are there any note worthy differences between the arrow version and the shout select? Meaning PQ or AQ, Subtitles, etc? not interested in extras.

It's the same thing with Strange Days. I have the DVD but there's no blu-ray. So many movies without adequate releases.

To Live and Die in L.A. and Strange Days aren't even streaming anywhere either. I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them right now.
