Sometimes my wife and I get bored of mainstream entertainment. When it comes to music we like all kinds but sometimes we get bored and dig up outsider music to listen to to stimulate us some. The kind where despite being terrible has something special to it and is unlike anything else because they really were trying. Same with movies, and now we're in a slump where everything is too predictable, by the numbers, safe and well boring. Even movies we like.
So today by chance we stumbled across the greasey strangler. Man it was ****ing weird, bit gross, dumb, strange and very oddly a lot of fun. Now we want some more. It was just this messed up perfect storm of a movie. With that said, we don't want something that is "weird for the sake of being weird", like someone with a digital camera trying really hard to make something weird. We want something where someone actually tried to make a good movie but it came out really messed up. Like the greasey strangler was despite it all good. The music was kind of catchy, the directing while not masterful was really solid, the characters were all odd as hell without feeling forced. Hope I'm explaining this ok, got a head ache now. |

If I'm reading you correctly, you're looking for something with high shock value that is also is a good movie. If that's the case there are some anime I can suggest.
Urotsukidoji - I haven't seen this myself yet, but it's pretty famous in anime circles. It's a dark, erotic, and graphic movie. Surprisingly, most people say it's got a pretty good story too. Some pretty uncomfortable stuff, but I'd like to see it once myself. Here's a review from Anime News Network - urotsukidoji Kite - Some very graphic violence, for maximum shock value seek out the uncut version. It's also very highly regarded for it's story, so it's not just empty violence. Here's a review from Anime News Network - Kite Ninja Scroll - A very well done revenge action story, with some of the best fight scenes ever done in animation. It's also very graphic with it's violence, and there is also a rape scene. It's actually not as graphic as the other two, but it's deffinately not tame. Review here on Blu-ray - Ninja Scroll Akira - One of the best sci-fi movies ever made. It's a must watch. The violence and gross stuff is fairly brief, but it is still pretty extreme by western standards. There is some really heavy stuff going on in this film. It'll make you uncomfortable, and it'll make you think. Review here on Blu-ray - Akira Finally, a live action title: Metallica: Through the Never - It's a recording of a Metallica concert mixed with shots from a story about man going through a post apocalypse city. Not a lot of gore, but a lot of dark imagery. As a hybrid of concert and short movie, it's deffinately defferent from just about everything out there. The 3D version would give you the full effect, but it's also good in 2D. Review here on Blu-ray - Metallica: Through the Never |

On the other hand, if it not necessarily dark movies you're looking for, but something that's weird, off beat, and unique, anime's got that too. A synopsis of these titles wouldn't give them justice, so I'll let the review do the talking. These are all t.v. series, not movies, but they're well worth your time.

Hands of Steel.
What a hoot. An Italian Terminator rip-off (and I do mean RIP-OFF) from 1986. Catchy score by one of the guys with Goblin. George Eastman overacting to his hearts content as a guy who JUST CAN'T LET LOSING AN ARM WRESTLING MATCH go. It's basically the main reason for his villainy. Had I not mentioned the arm wrestling? It's like a Terminator (rip off) with more arm wrestling than Over the Top! It's insanity. Plus, John Saxon with THE biggest gun I think I've ever seen. Bonus: The hero's name is Paco Querak. PACO. QUERAK.! It's....amazing lol.. |

![]() ![]() ![]() The Jackhammer Massacre (2004) - Weird, disturbing and bad yet entertaining, somehow. Skinned Deep (2004) - Very bizarro but original. Wolf Girl (2001) - A very good movie that happens to be very weird. Last edited by Leslie Dame; 01-20-2021 at 08:19 AM. |
