I currently have polk monitor 30 as fronts and jbl n24 as surrounds. I´m planning to upgrade real soon either to a sub or polk monitor 50 or 60 for fronts and sending my monitor 30 to the back. What do you think I should buy first, I don´t have a sub right now so that should be my next move but the monitor 50 and 60 can hold their own without a sub for a while.

Good point. Are the 60´s worth the extra 60 bucks? compared to the 50´s. I´m sure they are but considering that I only have an onkyo 605, I don´t think I would use their potential

I can say my 606 (a hair away from your 605) pushes the 50's VERY well. I'd say go with the 60's- why not.
You can bi-amp them as well. I noticed an improvement, and it only takes an extra set of cables and adjusting the settings. When I upgraded, I needed a powered sub so I went with the lil Sony on a DIY riser that makes it sound pretty good. It thumps and for about $80 it's worth it for a temp. fix. (and you can always use a sub somewhere) And slide those 30's to rears when you get the new ones... Last edited by Grevlin; 04-28-2009 at 12:00 AM. |

It seems like you already have front, center, and surround speakers. I would suggest a good subwoofer. It is possible that the new subwoofer will enhance your sound so much that it will kill your urge to upgrade your front speakers. Even if you buy better front speakers, you will eventually need a good subwoofer for LFE applications. You might as well do it now.

your fronts are both with 5.25inch woofers, and a center that has 4.5inch woofers,
my first question is, does your center actually 'sound' like they match your fronts? my second question is, if ever you do decide to upgrade to towers, you've got yourselve a pair of bookshelves with the same diameter woofer as the towers, you're only gain would be around 10hz at the bottom of the spectrum. is that much of a reason to upgrade? in my opinion, this looks like a lateral upgrade, with minimal benefits, and 'just having towers' isnt enough of a reason for me to double dip again. either you get a greater center speaker to match your monitors, or get a subwoofer. |

Polk CS1 Center for $89.99 id definetly get a new center channel speaker id also wait until the monitor 60 or t90e (european m60) are available if the monitor 50 with 2 woofers is 99.99, get an extra woofer for 129. you can find a decent sun for 100 bucks.....just look around. id go for clarity 1st, then get the bass. youll be shocked how much better it sounds with a new center/tower fronts. then the 30s in the back will be in their proper place.....as surrounds |

i guess ive redirected him to check his current setup, and see the most overlooked speaker in his system to be the center.
a great bookshelf speaker is comparable to a tower in certain perspectives, and hoping that he can rethink his gameplan in regards to upgrades. like ive mentioned, id get the center firsthand. the problem with upgrades is that we end up doubling our expenses, when we can resolve that with better investing. no point in buying 100 dollar speakers, then upgrade to something else later along the line, losing that 100 dollars which couldve been used towards the better model instead. |

There was a coupon floating around for an additional $15 off of the black 60's = $115.00 a piece (place two seperate orders). I'd do a Google search and pick those 60's up while to still can....that's what I did...minus the extra $30 d'oh!

I also agree that you should focus on improving your center channel, and this is a good way to do it. Here's the link....I might have to get me one of those....! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882290024 Last edited by Fors*; 04-28-2009 at 06:58 PM. |

First, I'd say don't underestimate your 605. Its a great receiver and I have one myself. It can push most speakers very well as it has very adequate power. Were you to step up to some big power hungry speakers you would probably want to go separates anyway, or at least get a very high end receiver which will cost just as much.
I think I would go with a center channel upgrade myself. Its the main reason I changed out my old Onkyo speakers...the center was lacking. A good center should make a significant impact. I would also recommend a sub...that with an improved center should make a huge difference...I think more than upgrading your front L and R speakers to the Monitor 60's. Get a good center to match the speakers you have, and get a good 10" sub. I'm not sure what your budget is, but I'm sure Big Daddy and Driver King can give you some good advice on subs that can accommodate your budget. |
