Default Harry Potter (TV Series) HBO Max

A Harry Potter live-action TV series is in early development at HBO Max. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that executives at the WarnerMedia-backed streamer have engaged in multiple conversations with potential writers exploring various ideas that would bring the beloved property to television. Sources say broad ideas have been discussed as part of the early-stage exploratory meetings. -THR

Whatever they choose to do will likely be perfectly fine and people will hate it anyway.

As long as they don't try to do a gender/race swap just for the sake of it and keep it to 7 seasons to match the books and keep them 6-10 episodes depending on the length of each book instead of 13-22 and try to stretch it out to get more seasons out of it, then it could be good.

Erm, I doubt this’ll be following the Potter stories already done. It’s likely to be spin-offs set in Wizarding World.

If they're developing a "Harry Potter" tv series then it has to involve them or they're using incorrect wording, so the no gender/race swap would still stand. If they want to do stuff set in that world, they need to say that. It's be like saying an Iron Man tv series and it being Hawkeye, same universe but not the same property.

I like this complication:

'Harry Potter' Live-Action TV Series in Early Development at HBO Max (Exclusive) - Hollywood Reports 1/25/2021

Quote:
The Harry Potter franchise has complicated rights issues. Rowling controls the franchise and has a say in everything involving the property. NBCUniversal in 2016 inked a rich seven-year rights deal with Warner Bros. Domestic TV Distribution that included U.S. broadcast, cable and streaming rights to the Wizarding World franchise. That deal, which ends in April 2025, included digital initiatives as well as theme park content and events. The pact also meant Warners execs had to make a side deal that allowed all of the Harry Potter features to briefly stream on HBO Max when the service launched last May. The films left the service after three months and will return to NBCUniversal's recently launched streamer, Peacock, at a date to be determined later this year.

I agree although even then.....why? The films were more than enough and already seemed as Bilbo Baggins said "butter spread over too much bread".

Ive always felt the Potter films to be an OK watch but nothing really special. Just not that riveting to me. Maybe a TV show could be better? But if they start messing with the core content as you mentioned with "swaps" then see ya later. Screw that.

I had a whole thing about brand recognition typed out, but my internet crapped out on me. This is better brevity, lol

Too bad. I was hoping for a TV adaption. The movies rushed through every single book.

Could have said "based in Harry Potter's Wizarding World" or something. Brand recognition without misleading wording.

Yeah they could hash some stuff out better, because even the longer films tend to rush some aspects or change it to move it along faster for a film. They did the same with The Golden Compass, which is now also a TV show. That's why I said the episode order could be different with each book, you wouldn't need as many episodes for book 1 than you would for book 4-7.

As much as they could do the books justice, the films only finished ten years ago and the franchise itself is still running in film form (granted to diminishing effect). But more importantly the Potter brand is still a cash cow, the films still resell, there are theme parks and attractions, the locations remain tourist hotspots and the merchandise is an enterprise all on it’s own.

I can’t see Warner willing to risk tanking all that with a soft reboot this early on, which is why I’m pretty sure this’ll be more spin-off, in-universe stuff, particularly with comments like “exploring ideas”. Especially with The Mandalorian taking off, I think Warner are hoping for their own version of that, as opposed to alienating the fanbase and dividing them with #notmypotter incarnations.

Anyway I think a spin-off could be good, there’s more than enough Potter lore out there to do fun stuff, and as long as it keeps them away from smashing the glass on the emergency Cursed Child screenplay that is an inevitability, then I’m all for it.

Marauders show or just do a show about the Black family during Sirius and Bellatrix’s younger years. Could all tie together nicely.

JK Rowling’s politics have already poisoned the brand to such an extent that any “woke” person that could be made even remotely interested in Harry Potter by making it more diverse wouldn’t be.

Yeah I think Ro definitely burnt her invitation with the community that would advocate for more diversity.

There hasn’t really been any new IP released since the JKR meltdown to test the waters on how far the brand has been damaged. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see this and FANTASTIC BEASTS flop and then watch the entire Harry Potter thing just quietly go away.

That will never happen as long as the world runs on money.

This is one of the Top 3 franchises across nearly every possible platform.

It'll go away when the Rapture comes, and even then...

I really don't think 99% of either fans or normal people give a flying flap what some nutter brigade on Twatter thinks about anything. This is the mistake most companies are making these days - pandering to a tiny minority of loudmouthed failures while apparently ignorant of the fact that most normal people are despairing of their constantly capitulating to these losers.

LOL, calling JK Rowling a nutter brigade loudmouthed failure loser is just the absolute truth.

This top three franchise list of yours must be: HARRY POTTER, STAR WARS, and GAME OF THRONES.
