Default CODA (2021, Sian Heder)

Quote:
In a record-setting purchase, Apple Studios has emerged as the winner of “CODA,” the virtual Sundance sensation about a young hearing girl who grapples with breaking away from her deaf family.

The Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht-led studio paid close to $25 million for the film, breaking last year’s recording setting “Palm Springs” sale at north of $22 million.

As Variety previously reported, rapturous audience response and glowing reviews powered the 2021 Sundance Day One premiere to a bidding war, which included interest from Netflix and Amazon. The latter was said to be keen on the upbeat tearjerker, Variety reported, but did not have the bandwidth to release the film in 2021 with their loaded slate.

Breakout lead Emilia Jones plays Ruby, the daughter of a charismatic and tight-knit deaf family on the coast of Massachusetts. Fishermen by birth for generations, Ruby is crucial to the daily lives of her clan as the only hearing person in the house. Her dream of singing leads to a scholarship opportunity that forces a life-changing choice. [+]

I’ll give it a watch. This seems to be one of the few breakouts from Sundance this year.

I've been hearing/reading good things about this, and I'll basically watch anything with Marlee Matlin in it. Bonus that Ferdia Walsh-Peelo is finally working more.

This seems really lame, but it must be great if they paid that much for it.

it doesn’t seem like the type of film that would draw people to subscribe to Apple TV+.

And why would you assume that?

It would certainly draw me to it, if I didn't already have a free one-year subscription.

I'm watching this later, and am looking forward to it. Low key, humanistic dramas are becoming all too rare a breed.

As a CODA myself, I really loved the movie. That ensemble cast is hilarious together, and the film overall has some insanely specific details that feel pulled straight from my own life. Plus, to see real Deaf actors play Deaf characters is so damn refreshing.

In case you are interested, or anyone else. The director talks about the effort she went through for authenticity and the consultants she got.

Liked it a lot. Very moving. Reminded me of Running On Empty.

That’s exactly what I was thinking while watching it. A cross between “Running On Empty” with bits of “Mr. Holland’s Opus” mixed in.

total random thought / comment: I thought actor Daniel Durant ('Leo') reminded me a lot of actor Jack Reynor in appearance.

...

watch this movie !!

This might be my favourite movie of 2021 so far. The only downside is that Apple's purchase of it from Sundance, followed by them dropping it in August, could have cost the movie a legitimate Oscar shot. It really needed to be slowly rolled out and allowed to become one of those Little Movie That Could snowball hits via word of mouth.

The strongest comparison that I can think of is Billy Elliott.

‘CODA’ is my favorite film (so far) this year. Absolutely fantastic entertainment.

The Booth Bijou gives it 5 out of 5 stars!

Thumbs up

Absolutely wonderful! Total crowd-pleaser. I honestly can't even think of any issues I had with it. It felt genuine and didn't manipulate in a way that made me feel queasy. Emilia Jones and Daniel Durant are excellent. I liked Ferdia Walsh-Peelo as the main character's love interest too. I haven't seen him in anything since Sing Street.

It was also funnier than I expected. I laughed out loud a few times.

Hoping this gets some love this awards season. It's a gem.

9/10 (A)
