I tend to wait for the price to drop now more then I ever did and pick up titles when they go in to offers. I don't do much blind buying any more I did pick up Erik the Viking and Skyfire blind. Skyfire was the best £7 I have spend while Erik was a disappointment. And I am more picky with what I upgrade to 4k now as well.

I'm slowly becoming more determined to avoid splurging on films when I already have quite a hefty pile that I need to watch. Space at my house is a premium (I've already binned the cases of some of the more generic titles in my collection and stuffed them in little plastic wallets) and I can't justify everything spilling over as I really hate it when things look messy. I have ADHD so the urge to just buy stuff compulsively can get out of control so I always try to have a ruthless purge every once in a while to help clear the shelves (and my head!). Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. Brexit and Covid have certainly made me think a lot harder about what I really want to have in my collection.
Like Aclea said in his post, I've faced whether or not this collecting is tipping over into addiction. I really have to keep reminding myself of that. Last edited by XGEEKEDGERX; 02-21-2021 at 12:30 PM. |

I can't remember the last 'new' movie I bought, probably Midway. The Nightingale could well be the most recent(ish) film I want to pick up.
I still buy stuff. Not as much as I used to. There seems to be a neverending supply of special offers and titles going OOP (sometimes a combination of the two). I ran out of space ages ago. I figured I'd have a lot of time during the lockdown, but I got a new job and I have been working flat out to meet demand (I'm actually working now). I'm not too fussed about steelbooks any more. Total pain in the arse. If they aren't pristine I send them back. Most quite often have imperfections. I don't go in my room much now. My sub died at Christmas and I'm trying to buy a new one (an Arendal 1961, but I'm still not sure which one, probably the 1S). One thing that does make me hesitant, especially with '4K remasters' on BD, is the little voice in the back of my head "Wait for the UHD". Last edited by Ste7en; 02-21-2021 at 08:57 AM. |

I enjoyed your post but this blows my mind. Maybe I've misunderstood, but you buy films and then don't watch them properly? |

Over the last 12 months my collection has changed from bringing me stress rather than joy. I live in an apartment with 2 other people, space is just not available. Pre lockdown #1 we were in the middle of buying a house until the seller and his agent turned out to be that little bit too dodgy (boring story) and as I'd already packed everything up, and sold my storage units, it's a year later and everything is still in boxes...
I used to buy stuff just for the sake of buying it, as I was packing the stuff away I was surprised by how many things I'd not watched yet - mostly catalogue titles of films i had seen before. I really do want to have a massive purge but like others have said, knowing that essentially the resale value on most films is peanuts, that kind of annoys me. Selling them on eBay is also a pain for very little return. I reckon I'll send the the major studio 'worthless' films to Music Magpie in a job-lot. I think by the end of it I expect to have a more curated collection, no double-dips and mainly boutique products, although I have an awful lot of Arrow Video films which I doubt I plan on rewatching! It's a big task, and one which I keep putting off. As for 4K discs, when I got my PS5 I thought that I'd be excited to start getting 4K discs but the temptation isn't really there. I did pick up a few and I probably will over time, but I have just started waiting until they are in a sale over on iTunes and buying the 4K version there. It's not as good as the disc no, but the trade-off is more convenient, takes up no additional space and is often 75% cheaper than the disc. |

I've cut down my buying significantly during the pandemic. Part of it is not knowing if I'll still have a job when hospitality starts up again and I've been saving more money just in case. Also I would like to re-watch some titles and with a big unwatched pile it doesn't happen. I've now had a 4K player for around a year and still haven't watched half my 4K discs as I started collecting them before buying a player and 4K tv.
I do have 4 titles on pre-order 2 of which are 4K UK Disney releases coming in March as I had an Amazon £5 off code. The other 2 are likely to be very limited production run releases so waiting for a price drop isn't really an option. |

Most of us have had to cut back with job uncertainty (myself included) so have made cutbacks. It’s just a fact of how things are at the moment.

For almost a year I've been a stay at home daddy ( I have my job still so all good) and all this time I haven't really had much $ to spend so I went ruthless and sold a good bunch of stuff in three parts.
Got some more space and been buying new stuff with the money I got from the collection. Still a bit sad as a collector but it certainly needed to be done. I had no desire to ever watch them again and some go for good money. Problem is Im behind my watchlist schedule all the time even though I have tons to go through. I just cant seem to get the watching done which is certainly new for me. I think its just the general lack of time to relax or do absolutely nothing that makes me lie down and start messing with the phone instead of watching films once I do have some levity. I do still always meet my target for the month but I do hope I had more time for films Ive allready seen to go at them again. I might consider going through the rest of the year not buying anything but essentials but it seems this year all that is released is absolutely essential (like every year lol). Still having fun with films and collecting so all is good but could really use a good ass kicking to wake me up from this coma of delaying the actual watching ![]() |

I am beyond not knowing where to put my discs, but it's not stopping me from buying new items in the slightest.
I need to be careful because whereas I used to be careful about double-dipping, I have almost stopped caring about it because I'm so busy and I don't want to risk losing the opportunity to buy the item. I find a very small number of releases to be appealing as steelbooks, I find the majority pretty ugly, and from what I understand, they are often including less extra material (maybe just a coincidence) and with them costing often 3-4 times more than the regular release (why?) and being exclusive to retailers who aren't shipping-friendly to me, I have no desire to buy them. I never counted my Bluray Discs but I think it's at least 1000 while for DVD's it's probably more around 5000. Had as many VHS tapes too (though mostly were recorded from tv). It would be a dream to catalog them and sort them but I have neither time nor space. I had begun a nice excel sheet with tags as well (started 15 years ago) but then had to stop and never resumed because I always thought it would be too complicated to find out where I left off, and in the meantime the gap has grown larger and larger. But my love in buying these and watching them has never decreased. Last edited by UnionJackMix; 02-22-2021 at 12:36 PM. |

The existential dread set in on me the other day with the realisation that if I did nothing else but sit and watch every single film I have unopened on my shelves, I would need to receive a telegram from Her Maj.
My buying habits changed too this past year. They got worse. The lack of anywhere to go meant more and more purchases were for home entertainment. When the GST was added to foreign purchases and we became lumbered with Zavvi and Rarewaves, I seriously thought that would be the death of my collection. Neither site are reliable or particularly swift with their deliveries. But the expansion of Amazon AU with the UK seller in the marketplace, 'free' Prime International postage with much rapid deliveries (regularly 5 - 7 days for me at the moment) meant the pace only picked up again. I've decided to only purchase from the independent and imaginative labels and with Imprint appearing on the scene, that's the usual US & UK names as well as our improving domestic scene. I've gone through periods of collecting every title from the boutique labels, but have decided I have too many titles that on reflection, were purchased for completeness rather than genuine interest or curiosity in the films themselves. I'm not bothering with a 4k player. Blu ray is a superb format and since I've purchased films in 8mm Super 8, VHS, DVD & BR, I think that enough is enough. I still love this era of physical media and hope it is sustainable for as long as possible |

Quality over quantity is my Blu-ray collecting mantra these days. I scaled my collection back a fair bit, stopped making blind buys, and look to the boutique offerings when adding new titles. I'll only buy a film that I'll re-watch. I had too many Blu-rays I watched once that then just sat on the shelf for years collecting dust.
