Marantz SR8002 + Magnepan

Been tempted lately to move to Magnepans, not sure if my receiver can handle them though. Was thinking of running:

2 x MG12's (fronts)
2 x MMG's (surrounds)
1 x CC3 (center)

If anyone has experience with either Maggies or running 4 ohm speakers on the 8002, I'd like to hear from you.

As I recall, Magnepans can be a pretty difficult load for a lot of receivers and even some amps. I would say that you would be much better off and the Magnepans would sound and perform much better with separate amps and also ultimately a separate Pre/Pro. So if you are dead set on the Magnepans and their sound, I would say to get the separate amp (s) first and then when I could to replace the receiver with a Pre/Pro.

Wait, I was under the impression Maggies were ridiculously expensive. These MMGs are $599/pair?! Although, clearly I would say they aren't for the beginner enthusiast, even at this entry-level price.

On the other note, I am sure the Marantz 8002 could handle this, ohm-wise - but I am unsure as to the power wants of these planar speakers, I'm not too wise up on it. I'm sure you've read the following quote from the website:

How much power do I need?

Edit: You know what, now that I read more into it, I think separates are necessary.

The same conclusion I came up with. Think I'm going to stick with my Monitors for now and build up a 2 ch system when things pick up again at work.

Nope, even their top-of-the-line MG 20.1s are only about $15K.

To the OP: yes, you'll need an amp with plenty of current reserves to properly drive a set of Maggies. I think receivers need not apply...

Not even 15k if you don't mind used, these babies are on Audiogon for 4500.00

Not only are they a difficult load to drive (not that I'm worried about that) but they are also rather inefficient. However - with the proper gear they are said to be magical! I have actually considered the same setup that you are looking at (I have also considered ML CLS or II's - the original ones not the new series out - way to rich for my blood). I agree that you would need seperates for that kind of a system.

But, that is the beauty of making your purchases in pieces. As I had suggested earlier in the thread, consider first getting a good 2 channel amp off of Audiogon. Then get the speaker and ultimately when you can, sell the receiver to help to pay for the replacement Pre/Pro (which again can be gotten off of Audiogon). Just a thought if you think that you will be able to afford this option.
