I liked the movie, but didn't love it (meaning wouldn't buy the blu ray if available)

Pros: The young actor was terrific. The fact that he only has a handful of lines (the character is mute), so the performance is all his facial expressions and physical.

The demon (both cgi and make-up) doesn't really kick-in for me till the third iteration in it's female form. ...has to be a nod to Sam Rami relative to the look of the demon.

Lastly, the sound design was terrific. I suggest watching this film in the dark with the sound kicked up. The story is set in the 80's so the synthesizer soundtrack is appropriate.

Cons: I found the whole "book of shadows" to fall into trope territory. The Pinocchio parable was a little trite/cheesy. I wasn't fan of the ending

I would recommend it for a redbox rental.

One aspect of the film that worked (too) was the claustrophobic nature of the where the film takes place (all inside a small two bedroom apartment (with the exceptions of the flashbacks).

I've always felt horror films which use small spaces when well done are the most chilling (to me).

I haven't seen this movie yet, but my only question is, how does a genie have trouble killing a kid in a single apartment? Then again, genies having trouble doing anything about it without a wish in most movies. But I don't know what the rules here are.

I wouldn’t described the entity as a genie but a demon who may or may not grant wishes. Think of it more akin to selling your soul to gain something

Actually there is not much difference between a genie and a demon. I know we all like to think about Aladdin's genie, but genies are actually more like demons, if anything.

Reading on-line, I see your point relative to this film.

Biblically speaking, they are different since demons are fallen angels.

Recent recommendation for an good religious (storyline) horror film is "Saint Maud"....which is currently available for free on Hulu and Amazon Prime (not sure if it's playing on epix still).

My son and I watched it this weekend and really enjoyed it. Terrific performances, story and visuals. I will say it's a slow burn, so some may classify this as a horror drama.

A genie is a djinn trapped in a bottle (or container of some sort) and forced to grant wishes to the owner. So all genies are djinns but not all djinns are genies.

My favorite review for the film was on Letterboxd: Home Alone vs. Wishmaster.

Saw the film in Beverly Hills tonight. Enjoyed the pacing of the film, wasn't the biggest fan of the sound design, but horror movies where loud sound is mistaken for ambiance have never been my cup. Wasn't surprised

Decent movie. The kid did a terrific job. But the looks of the djinn in human form all look like stuff you'd see in those short horror films on Youtube. The music/soundtrack in the movie is banger though.

A lot of the "scares" were predictable as well. I was like "I bet the hand is going to bust through the vent, I bet it's going to be behind him", etc. And was right 90% of the time.
