Ivan's Childhood and Andrei Rublev (and definitely The Steamroller and the Violin, if you wish to count it) are more accessible than anything that came after.

I went through the Tarkovsky filmography last summer. I found the most accessible to be Ivan's Childhood, Solaris, and Stalker. The latter two have sci-fi premises which serve as nice hooks for a viewer who's trying to figure out what he/she is watching. Andrei Rublev is very long and it's difficult to get into its more episodic structure and connect with what it all means.

Mirror is Tarkovsky's best film because it's all about the visceral and collective experience of watching a film without all the pretentious, cerebral, philosophical s*** that is of his other films.

The Nostalghia PQ is pretty bad. The Sacrifice is better, but there's a lot of halo'ing.

You're better off getting the Kino releases from the US, if you're region free. PQ on Nostalghia is much better, and on The Sacrifice is stunning.

If you're not region free... well, you ought to be

I'm Region Free and a US resident. I forgot Kino released The Sacrifice. Good to know about Nostalghia. It's gonna take a little longer for a great version of that title. The old Kino release is flawed.

Criterion Mirror - Criterion Collection - July 6, 2021

https://www.criterion.com/films/28894-mirror

Quote:
A subtly ravishing passage through the halls of time and memory, this sublime reflection on twentieth-century Russian history by Andrei Tarkovsky (Stalker) is as much a poem composed in images, or a hypnagogic hallucination, as it is a work of cinema. In a richly textured collage of varying film stocks and newsreel footage, the recollections of a dying poet flash before our eyes, his dreams mingling with scenes of childhood, wartime, and marriage, all imbued with the mystical power of a trance. Largely dismissed by Soviet critics on its release because of its elusive narrative structure, Mirror has since taken its place as one of the director’s most renowned and influential works, a stunning personal statement from an artist transmitting his innermost thoughts and feelings directly from psyche to screen.

- New 2K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
- Andrei Tarkovsky: A Cinema Prayer, a 2019 documentary about the director by his son Andrei A. Tarkovsky
- The Dream in the Mirror, a new documentary by Louise Milne and Seán Martin
- New interview with composer Eduard Artemyev
- Islands: Georgy Rerberg, a 2007 documentary about the cinematographer
- Archival interviews with Tarkovsky and screenwriter Alexander Misharin
- New English subtitle translation
- PLUS: An essay by critic Carmen Gray and, for the Blu-ray, the 1968 film proposal and literary script by Tarkovsky and Misharin that they ultimately developed into Mirror
Release Date: July 6, 2021

Have the Artificial Eye release, but this transfer should trump that one, so a double dip is almost inevitable.

Just when I thought "no more Blu-Ray purchases for now", they pull me back in.

Am guessing there will be a UK release to go with Andrei Rublev, Solaris and Stalker?

This release is incredibly stacked, even if you already own different editions of the film.

Andrei Tarkovsky: A Cinema Prayer - 1h 38m

Plus, two additional documentaries.

Missing from the Artificial Eye are:

Quote:
"Andrei Tarkovsky's Metaphysical Dream Zone" an introduction by Mary Wild (2:35)
"Andrei Tarkovsky's Metaphysical Dream Zone Part 4: The Mirror - Alienation in Language" select scene commentary by Mary Wild (11:38)
[Archival] Interview with Composer Eduard Artemev (21:10)*
Interview with Oleg Yankovskiy (9:55)
Music Box Featurette "The Last Take" (3:24)
*This could be repeated from Criterion Solaris or Stalker but I'm not actually sure

It's a 2 disc set. I was worried for a second with that 1h38m documentary being included.

This is probably my second favorite Tarkovsky film. It's so magical.

That was also the case for Andrei Rublev not not sure about their other Tarkovskys, I think those were single discs.

Andre Rublev is the only other two disc Tarkovsky set. With that being such a long film (and having two cuts) it only makes sense. They did the same with Celine and Julie Go Boating but that released is loaded with extras.

Nashville and Fanny and Alexander shoved way too much content on a single disc. I'm hoping they've gotten away from that.
