I get as annoyed as anybody about the constant complaining about the lack of 4K releases from Criterion but I see no issues with this thread (other than its accidental placement in the blu-ray section.

Is Ran actaully available on 4K? I've heard the rumors, but never seen any confirmation.

How’s the La Haine disc? I think the Ran disc should have an asterisk. A preorder link went up. But nothing seemed to come of it.

The SUPERMAN set will come in two editions. A “limited collectors edition” is set to include the theatrical cut on 4K, and four Blu-rays that feature all three cuts of the film, plus new and legacy supplements (trailers, TV spots, etc,), isolated score track, five commentary tracks from the filmmakers and fans of the film, and a collectors book, all in a special red case.
The standard edition will be a four-disc blu ray set with the aforementioned features.
There will also be a new featurette created especially for this edition, “Superman The Legacy”, hosted by Darci Lynne with interviews from surviving cast members and new & archival interviews with stars of the Superman franchise.

This set is scheduled ......

HEY WAIT! APRIL FOOLS! This has not been officially announced yet, of course, for real. But then again, the definitive home entertainment release of SUPERMAN is still yet to come!
Gonna ride that one all day, huh?

As far as I know many people simply grab the 4K UHD disc and keep the Criterion around for the extras.
Might as well wait for the Criterion BDs to drop drastically in price too for those extras. Which is more than obvious as to what I'm doing. Already own three of these featured ITT and another is on its way.

This thread is a great idea. I'm sure Criterion won't release 4K because it's pretty much the peak format and I doubt studios would want to miss out on profits if they release it themselves. That's why so many of these 4K Criterions are international releases. And I think that's why Warner Bros. hasn't leased Pink Flamingos yet, as John Waters said they wanted to release it themselves.

If anything, I think you should consider doing a row of 3 or so so that the list isn't long as more titles get added. I also think you should note which ones have U.S. 4K releases, like The Princess Bride (but no U.S. 4K Blu-ray).

As for the snarky responses saying "don't you think people who want 4K Criterion releases already know about other studios releasing them?", no I didn't know that some of these were in 4K and I'm sure others don't either.

I would like to note that there is an Asian studio that plans on releasing Wong Kar-wai in 4K, although they recently made a post saying they might not. If you wanted to note that.

I have now denoted where a release is from, if not from the US. Thank you for the suggestions!

I meant to say U.S. iTunes 4K releases. The Princess Bride has no 4K U.S. release but it's in 4K on the iTunes Store. Nashville as well.

Are we excluding laserdiscs? Because there's been many

The Night Porter coming soon

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?p=18770340

sex, lies & videotape is supposedly coming in France

StudioCanal should be releasing Peeping Tom in a 4K restoration this year https://variety.com/2020/film/global...43-1234803143/

Postcards from Naked Lunch have been found within Arrow releases, and The Last Emperor is another likely candidate for 4K

Novamedia - Wong Kar-Wai https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=329169

Schizopolis, Gray's Anatomy, And Everything is Going Fine could be coming - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=335775

King Kong vs. Godzilla is not an English friendly release, FYI. If you are able to read and understand the Japanese language though (or can mux in your own audio), big win for you!

Why? It's not as if you are consistently comparing apples to apples, because in some cases the source for the film is distinct, and in many cases, the supplements and other variables such as languages and related subtitles, are also distinct.

So, based on what has been posted to date, just a bunch of titles, I'd say it's worthless, because we're comparing apples to oranges.

That said, if it will keep the UHD clown car from rolling through every Criterion threat and/or post and centralize the totality of stupidity in one place, well, that would be genius.

Said Asian studio stated given that they were offered the same 4K restorations as provided to Criterion, mastering in UHD was not worth the significant additional cost due to a negligible difference in appearance and related viewer experience.

Which, given the works in question combined with the director's intent, is a fair point.

The Criterion on UHD ship has sailed for me. I would have been excited a few years ago but my physical media library is already getting larger than I ever really anticipated and though I still enjoy watching movies I'm finding I have less and less time as other interests and obligations interfere. Also not sure if I see the point of this thread but if people are enjoying it, then that's great.

I think Criterion is unique compared to other distributors that could have threads made about them, because their library is so vast, over 1000 titles if not 2000 when one includes Eclipse, laserdiscs, boxsets, streaming titles, including some major ones. I think it has merit.

Whereas other distributors have a much smaller selection.
