Default Denon 2309 setup question

This Denon, while a quality unit, is a major pain to get running for an audio neophyte. The manual is horrid.

Anyway...I have finally dialed in my 7.1 speakers. I am unable to get sound piped to them. Hoping someone can tell me what I need to do because I'm beyond frustrated : )

I have a Pioneer BD player hooked into the Receiver via HDMI cable (into the first HDMI jack)

The receiver is properly hooked to the speakers and all is well there.

The receiver is hooked to an older TV (old Toshiba CRT) via yellow video (component) cable....until my new TV arrives.

I can get video signal from the receiver as I used the internal menu to dial in my wall speakers.

I popped a DVD into the BD player and cannot get video signal to the TV. I thought maybe this was part of the copy protection scheme (HDMI cable in requires an HDMI cable out and won't work if you use a component cable out)...but I'm unsure.

I then popped an audio CD hoping to hear the music on my speakers...no joy there either.

I've tried all the settings and I'm flustered right now. Anyone have one of these and can look at my temporary setup and tell me how I can get some sound going : )

Thank you in advance!

Pretty sure you can't go from an HDMI source down to a video out like that, you would have to run the yellow video direct from out of the BDP to your TV.

Edit> no idea on the music, maybe same deal? try the analog stereo outputs.

A single yellow video cable is actually composite video. Component video uses three cables.

Does your tv have component video or s-video inputs?

The red and white are sound I thought? The yellow is the video portion.

Am I wrong on this?

I don't understand why I can't bring a signal into my receiver via HDMI and pipe it out to an old TV via component cable.

Because you can't "downscale" a source. You can go from composite video to receiver , have the receiver upscale it and send it out via HDMI but it cannot go the other way.

I'm not sure why the audio wouldn't work, you may have to hook up with an optical cable or analog cables until your tv arrives.

Edit> the red/white are audio, yellow video, the 3 cables he's talking about above are video only and are in a bundle of 3, red-blue-green.

ah okay

I have audio now...front two speakers only though, damnit

I have the receiver set for DVD and it's at stero...I'm guessing because I have a L/R (red/white) cable this is why I can't get 7 channels since only 2 are being fed

Now I have to figure out why the yellow cable out to TV won't feed the DVD signal :/

I agree about the manual, but read bad translation Japonese Enlish (Read it as a bad translation from Japonese to English).

I never had any problems like you are experiencing with my 889 which is basically the same receiver.

Are all speaker wires tight?
Are all imput cables snug?
Do you have the speaker output set to B?
Are the front speakers connected to A?
Is the AVR muted (I have to ask)?
Is the input select set to HDMI1 (and that's where the BDP is plugged in)? (Note that this is titled DVD in the menu )
Have you toggled through all the audio output modes?

I thought you were using HDMI from the player to the receiver?

Hi Sammy thanks for the response.

Made some progress...my problem is I'm a neophyte and this Denon receiver seems to have a steep learning curve.

I have the front two speakers working and now have signal to the T.V.

Now...this thing is running on component cables from BD players to Receiver and component cables from receiver to old CRT TV.

I hooked an HDMI cable from BD player to receiver and have set the input to HDMI1 (which is where it's hooked up)

But when I unhook the L or R component cable, I lose sound. Therefore the receiver is not drawing the audio signal from the HDMI cable.

My question is....can I have component cables AND hdmi cables from my BD player to my receiver....and take the digital signals to my speakers but the component signal to my TV?

I took the HDMI off first due to above responses that a digital signal cannot be downgraded to a component video signal to an old TV.

Now it's back on IN ADDITION to the component cables, but the receiver appears to only see the component cables.

What I'm trying to do is watch DVDs on an old CRT TV but listen in full 5.1/7.1 audio.

DVD or Blu Ray?

If it is DVD, just use the optical connection for 5.1. If it is Blu Ray, then you have to use HDMI to get full HD audio (5.1 or 7.1) unless your player decodes and it has 8 analog audio outputs.

The sound parameters need to be set to "Standard" and the DSP set to Cinema PLII if you want to matrix the Surrounds to the back for a 5.1 sound track.

It's a Pioneer BD player.

I have component cables AND an HDMI cable connecting the BD player to the receiver.

I can't figure out why I can't get the receiver to see the HDMI cable and use it instead of the component cables for audio.

Unplug the analog audio cables from both units and try again with only HDMI. I am sure if I was in you living room right now I could fix it in a jiffy. This is kind of hard to troubleshoot over the net.

See page 32 of your manual and set the HDMI Setup - Audio to "Amp" (not "TV"). This is in the troubleshooting table on page 84 of your manual.

Thanks Sammy.

Since this Pioneer BD player auto senses the TV, I'm guessing it realizes that the TV is gimp because the Pio settings won't let me choose HDMI as a source...hence the Denon doesn't have the signal.

Thanks for the help!

I messed around with the BD player settings and I have the 7.1 sound system going...sounds pretty good but I'm not as impressed as I thought I'd be. I'm hoping this is because it's coming through analog cables to the receiver and not the HDMI.

My new Pioneer is coming tomorrow. Hopefully, it the glass panel will be intact. Wednesday I'll hang it and all the analog connections will be gone which should let me get the full effect of my sound system.

The Denon receiver is working out better as I'm finally understanding the menu system. A bit archaic and not intuitive...but I knew that before I bought it.

Thanks again for all the feedback. I'll post after the new Kuro is installed.

Default This guy is the Denon master

Read this setup guide. He has taken the manual and translated it to english haha. It's awesome and helped me set up my 2309 to perfection.

ENJOY!
