Default Anywhere to listen to director commentaries like a podcast?

I love the on-disc commentaries, but I'd rather just listen to them on the go (walking the dog, doing house work, etc.) than sit in front of the screen and watch the movie with them.

Is there anywhere that has a repository of these? Have any of them been released in podcast form? If someone put them in podcast form, I'm guessing studios would go after them.

I haven't listened to a commentary track in some years, but the last few times I did, I thought about this as well, and I realized that they wouldn't be remotely enjoyable to listen to out of context.

It's not like they're talking the entire two hours. There's lots of silence. And they also aren't explaining what's going on on-screen all the time, so unless you have like every minute of the movie memorized, there are going to be times where you don't know what the hell they're talking about.

You'd be better off just listening to podcasts about a specific movie/director. No shortage of those out there.

I have ripped commentaries extensively.

As for the silence, this is offset by hearing the movie in the background so not a big deal for me.

I enjoyed them many times over on the go when I wouldn't normally have the time.

I remember having a job that had a decent commute and going through every listening to the Boogie Nights commentaries as well as Hard Eight. Just simply wonderful. Would listen to them in the car, on the go, and when I heard parts of the movie I knew exactly where the director was talking.

So trust a person from experience, yes it is well worth ripping them if you enjoy the movies and know them well.

I remember doing some Kevin Smith commentaries and those were a scream. I loved it!

If there was ever a time that I wanted to know something specific just write down a time and go to that in the movie. Again not too difficult and surely not enough to throw out the idea!

Lets give an example Robert Zemeckis is dong commentary on Forrest Gump I hear "I like the way that guitar sounded..." I think I can figure out that one pretty good.

I’ve put a few commentaries into my iTunes, actually. I wish there was an easier way to get them; in some cases, I can’t because of region codes.

Actually, very few of the commentaries I have listened to (and I've listened to a lot) have any significant silent stretches in them.

There are a lot of film-focused podcasts that do commentaries. I enjoy listening to these quite a bit. Just do a search in your favorite podcast app for whatever movie you're interested in plus "commentary" and you might be surprised at just how many there are.

Yes, they are fan commentaries, but a lot of them are pretty enjoyable.

For obvious reasons, no there is not a repository (at least not a legal one) of audio commentaries available to listen to online.

I was able to find this one, not sure how long it'll be around, but they've got some good commentaries up and new ones are being added every few days.
