how did 300 on hd dvd leapfrog blu-ray (which is still at a comfortable 5)??
not to mention the other 5 hd dvd titles that snuck up into the top 25. hd dvd total in top 25: 6 (#'s 2,7,10,19,20,22) blu-ray: 5 (#'s 5,14,17,21,25) is this steam from paramount??? i don't understand? Last edited by ReduxInflux; 08-29-2007 at 05:53 AM. |

There are various promotions at Amazon. The promotions have gotten a lot of visibility at places like digg. As always, look to the Nielsen numbers. We'll see how they do over the next few weeks.

The sales of both are anomalously high temporarily:

But those moving from BD-only to both formats would not get 300 after buying a hd-dvd player. They would probably have had 300 already if they had a BD player and liked the movie. I think this is mostly due to new hd-dvd-only owners, given that at the same time sales of hd-dvd's Departed are high too... corroborating evidence since it has been out on BD for ages and the previously-BD-but-now-neutral would have got it on BD already. The Para switch has generated a new swathe of hd-dvd owners, most of which are non-neutrals. Time for BDA to do something to get more sales. The regular weekly increments of PS3 and standalones will not be enough. Or this could be just me over-reacting. I must say the perception from Para is damaging as hell. Can the BDA please start marketing the fact that they have the big 3 exclusive to BD? Last edited by What'sHD; 08-29-2007 at 06:10 AM. |

The Amazon sale going on right now is what is causing this. The Blu-ray sale has 105 items for buy 2 get 1 free. The HD-DVD sale has 55 items at buy 2 get 1 free. HD-DVD owners have far fewer titles to choose from within this Amazon sale therefore those 55 titles are going to sell more copies to those that are taking advantage of the sale, thus boosting that titles individual sales number even higher. A lot of people end up buying the same bundles as their neighbor since they don't have as good of a selection as the Blu-ray sale. Blu-ray owners have many more titles to choose from in this sale - 105 total. Almost 2 to 1 over HD-DVD. Hmmm, very interesting. Therefore, sales of each title are not going to be as artificially inflated because we have more options to choose from. So, to sum it up, the actual sales rank of the Blu titles don't get as much of a boost as the HD-DVD titles because Blu-ray owners have more choices in this sale. You follow? |

Don't know the numbers, but the PS3 is ranked #2 in Video Game hardware sales. Just under the Nintendo Wii. It's gotta be selling large quantities...

relax, I'm sure a lot of people will be getting the 360 add-on, you can get 11 movies for the price of 2 with King Kong ontop of the 8 and 3 for 2 added on, throw in a player for 100+something bucks and it will cause the numbers to go up.
BD should still come out ahead in the Neilsens, and the prize to keep the eyes on is Christmas. |

It all has to do with how much stock they have. They could be sold out or low on stock of 300 on Blu-ray but then have a bunch of HD DVD. Demand is pretty constant for both so since HD DVD has copies to sell it moves quickly up the ranks. Amazon is a horrible judge of any trends or actual sales of any product.

I wouldn't worry too much. Whenever there is a "spike" (big new release, sale, etc.), HD seems to fluctuate more that BD. (Maybe because of a fewer number of rabid fans? Who knows.
