This is very good news. Was hoping it would get a release here.

Great movie. The OOP Arrow edition that I have is quite solid but a new transfer would of course be very welcome.

So, looks like a newer transfer than the one in the Martin Scorsese presents... box set??

I’m pretty sure it’s the same restoration. The new probably refers it to being new to Criterion.

I’m curious to know this also. I have both the Arrow and the Scorsese Box, but what the hell, I’d “triple-dip” if there is significant improvement in the Criterion. Fantastic film.

Yeah, I didn’t hear about it until it sold out.

There have been copies crop up, on occasion, from a few overseas sellers. The Polish films thread had some forum members finding copies fairly recently. I was lucky enough to snag a copy of volume 3 from Milestone Films before it eventually sold out. I picked it up primarily for Mother Joan of the Angels, but with the otherwise unreleased films in the set by Munk, Wajda, Morgenstern, etc., it was worth the $150 price tag. I’m still kicking myself for not getting the first 2 sets.

^Noice, this will be a decent upgrade over the now old Academy disc...unless Arrow Video also announces a new version for the UK.

I'm just now watching the late 2022 UK release of the War Trilogy set from Second Run and sadly they are using the old 2010s era master of Ashes and Diamonds, and as such, now looks the weakest of the films! The audio still has that strange timbre with a subwoofer activating "thump thump thump" on footsteps that was present on the Arrow release, and the visuals have all the same DNR sloppiness like ringing artifacts and frozen skies. Thankfully I stopped buying Polish Masterworks boxsets after the first (DNR) mess so this wasn't a triple dip, but the legacy of some of those heavy handed transfers remains with us to this day. Never figured the earlier Criterion release would be superior, but it appears so.

^I still got the Second Run set, because I love that label's dedication to arthouse cinema. But I may have to also get the Criterion for A&D. Hope it won't be a similar story for the other films in the set.
