Nice the new update here allows PS5 games to be stored as an external HD drive. Just need some actual PS5 games to store now, since the small number I have on PS5 I want on PS5 so I can remember what a PS5 early game looks like.
I have tons of PS4 games on my external drive that work well with PS5. Almost all my PS4 demos downloaded on my PS4 originally, then to the ext HD will not work on PS5. PS4 only. |

Something I hoped would be fixed and is still bad is the PS5 doesn't let you safely eject external drives that are not formatted by and for the PS5. I use a specific exfat formatted external drive to transfer pictures and videos from my PS4 and can safely eject it there but the PS5 will not give me the option, it only allows me to reformat which I don't want at all. I need my hard drives to all be mac and PC compatible so reformatting isn't an option anyways.
Hopefully a future update will fix this but until then I can't transfer my media safely off my PS5. |

I wouldn’t consider that safe, especially for drives that require external power. Turning off a bus powered drive without safely disconnecting can cause serious problems with the drive. And they DO allow other formats, the PS5 just doesn’t recognize it to safely eject. I can use my drive normally just fine otherwise.

I don't think they allow NTFS though. That's always been my problem. I need NTFS for my main drives but for PS3 I got a FAT formatted drive for backup because I had tons of music and video files and stuff on it, but for PS4 I didn't bother since everything you can lose you can just redownload anyway.

Transferred Borderlands 3 with All DLC to the Samsung T7.
Not bad results. I did think it would have gone faster. 88.56GB from PS5 to T7 = 11m 24s. I know it takes longer to reverse that process, so probably 15m-20m to get that file back. |

Yeah, it takes awhile even with super speed USB 3.1 after formatting my external new USB Drive by the PS5 under storage. 100 GBs took about 13 minutes or so.
It transferred 2 PS5 games there, and now is transferring two PS4 games there now too, to the same drive. I didn't think that was possible. Will be interesting to see if it lets me play the PS4 games while attached to PS5 since the PS5 games are store in there too. Waiting to see. My guess is probably not but who knows. I didn't expect it to be able to mix PS5 and PS4 games on the same external HDD. EDIT: Yes, it's showing "PLAY" in the PS5 formatted HDD I have connected for my digital PS4 games. I bet it'll work for disc games too to play as well included on the external Hard drive with PS5 games. The PS5 games just say "COPY"? To let you re install it to PS5. Good job, Sony!
