Default Later-build Samsung now pillarboxes 4:3!!!

One of my biggest gripes about the BD-P1000 has now been laid to rest. I had a Samsung player with a June build-date, and I swapped it for an August date (one with slightly improved PQ, and colored lights instead of the hourglass). Tonight, I popped on Underworld: Evolution and, for some reason, went to the featurettes, something I woudn't do with this player because I cannot stand watching 4:3 stretched out. Imagine my surprise to see black bars on the sides and 4:3 properly displayed! Further proof that modded players exist!

When the player launched in June, I gave it a try and was turned off by the 4:3 stretch as much as Hitch. I ended up returning it. But I called Samsung Customer Service several times anyway and kept mentioning that 4:3 stretch was a dealbreaker. I know I had nothing to do with this, but I'd like to think that someone at Samsung Customer Service actually listened. And I'm glad that I gave the player a second chance a few weeks ago. BD software has been steadily improving, and apparently so has the player.

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

Im a little confused as to what this is???? Is the player(old one) stretching a 4x3 image to fill a 16x9????

Yes, that's my understanding.

Yes, on 4:3 material, the launch players were stretching 4:3 video, like the featurettes on U:E or Memento. The new player I got with an August build date adds black bars to the left and right sides, displaying the 4:3 image correctly with no stretching, which is my preference.

It would be really nice to have the option to go between the 2. Because some people prefer stretched and others prefer bars on the side.
