It will probably street at $159. When you say off brand think Oppo Apex and a few others...they do sell well. I think the BDA needs something to combat these new low priced players and it should of been done yesterday. They knew they were coming for over 8 months. Paramount and Dreamworks also knew they were coming. BDA needs to quit sitting on their ass's and make a move. Cedia is coming soon they better be there with some good info or....

I don't see the need for just a 1080i player because your 1080p player can be set for 1080i. That's why I don't understand Toshiba for making one, I don't care how cheap it is. People will upgrade their tv's to a 1080p HDTV, and you'll have to buy another player at that time because you decided to get the 1080i player and you can't watch your movies at their full resolution.

I bet the people that buy this player would only buy at MOST 2 to 4 dvd's a year. SO that means they would only buy maybe at most 2 hd dud's? LOL have that POS hd dud's. It won't make a difference in movie sales. You can sell the players but when it counts it is the movie sales.

I don't know the answer to this, but how many TV's at Walmart are HD vs SD? And how many do they sell in a week? Its all these people that could be the target. And these players could sell in plenty of other places, wal-mart is just one potential target.

Either way, there are people that do shop at Wal-mart who might see this and own an HD TV.

alright.. I can't resist. So you are saying that "attach rate" is important?

I always see posts about the attach rate being unimportant when discussing blu-ray in a positive way?

I think anyone spending $150 on a player at Wal-mart would use it. Even if they only bought 2-4 movies a year, they'd probably rent the rest. Rentals do have an effect, albeit smaller.

Oh.. and lets not forget - the ratio of blu-ray to HD DVD sales would be much bigger if all PS3 owners bought 2-4 a year.

okay when they go to blockbuster to rent a movie are they going to see HD DUD? No....they will remember the last time they went to blockbuster that they only CARRY blu-ray and won't buy this POS.

OH and BDA did it right by giving away those 5 blu-ray movies for all blu-ray players. This will help those PS3 owners buy blu-ray movies cause they will know it can play them.

Maybe.

I'd say the person that buys this probably isn't that knowledgable and wouldn't know about the blockbuster deal. Its also possible they use netflix, but who knows, I'd question their intelligence in buying something with such an unknown manufacturer behind it.

I'm sure Toshiba is going to be really thrilled about this. They can't make money on thier players as it is, now they are undercut by a chinese player. And the top end player will be the Denon. It''s just sad.

And you could add Sams Club, Costco's they sell a ton of HDTV's for cheap...Vizio being one of the fastest growing companies selling 32" TV's and up. They sell because there are cheap. I'm sorry to say but price does sell. I bought my PS3 only because I got a $150 off with the Sony credit promotion. I'm cheap too.

Most the TVs and other electronics I see are walmart are made by 'off brand' companies - doesn't seem to stop people from buying them.

I work at electronics store. I think this fall, with sonys bravia lcd being our best seller and a top seller in the world, they should do a deal, buy a 40" or larger 1080p lcd and get a blu ray player for $100. Do this promo nationally, and just about every 1080p set sold you are attaching a blu ray player to. I think this would be a strong promo at our store. Even if its a mail in rebate- customers would love to take it with the set though. Then sony is getting a tv sale and a blu ray added on. Any time I sell a set, I try to add on a blu ray. Youd be suprised at how many blu rays I sell by asking. What do you guys think, any ideas for promos this fall?

IIRC, isn't something along these lines the theme of the "HDNA" campaign -- getting the devices to work together as a package? Dunno about any actual package discounts though.

Best Buy did this a few months ago. I got a 40" 1080p Sony, PS3 60g, 1 free Blu-ray, & 1 PS3 game for $2000.00.

I remember that sale! Im not from bestbuy, but I saw it in their add. My only thought would be do a standalone (older customers dont want a game system, they dont understand how well it works though), and a choice of tv- be it xbr,w3000, v3000. Use the margin on the television to compensate for loss on player. Im just thinking of ways of getting blu ray into the hands of the customer who might not be totally sold on blu ray, but with the promo with their set, its to hard to pass up.

Toshiba gets royalties though, so they have much more to gain. I'm sure they love this.

Same for Sony. Sony gets royalties for each blu-ray sold, so the more players, the more potential titles sold.

They frequently have sales up here where you buy the TV and for an extra $200 you get a whole 5.1 system including receiver (they usually say value $1000, maybe in MSRP land lol)... just integrate a blu-ray player into the receiver instead of a normal DVD player!

Raise your hand if you think the consumer will run out and spend $150 on a Canadian/Chinese no name and not $230 on a Toshiba.

MSRP of $199 means Wal-Mart will sell it for $169.

More good news for HD-DVD, as if they needed after this past week.
