Default Here Are The Young Men (starring Anya Taylor-Joy)

Quote:
Anya Taylor-Joy, star of The Witch, Split, Thoroughbreds and a former The Hollywood Reporter "Next Big Thing," has been cast in Irish coming-of-age film Here Are the Young Men.

Also cast in principle roles alongside Taylor-Joy are Dean-Charles Chapman (Game of Thrones, Breathe), Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders) and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo (Sing Street, Vikings). Lola Petticrew and Conleth Hill are also set to star.

To be written and directed by rising Irish filmmaker Eoin C. Macken, Here Are the Young Men is adapted from the acclaimed 2014 debut novel by Rob Doyle. The story is set in 2003, where in one last summer of adolescence, an aimless teenager named Matthew (Chapman), is pulled into a world of nihilistic toxic masculinity by his charismatic friend Kearney (Cole). Matthew yearns after his childhood sweetheart Jen (Taylor-Joy), an independent girl on her own trajectory, whilst their precocious friend Rez (Walsh-Peelo), starts to succumb to paranoia.

The film is being produced by TYM Production's Richard Bolger (Cardboard Gangsters) and Union Entertainment Group’s Noah Haeussner (Arctic), with Edwina Casey (Blackbird) co-producing. Paul W.S. Anderson, Andrew Davies Gans, Conor Barry and Michael Raimondi are serving as executive producers.

Produced by Irish banner TYM Productions with support from Screen Ireland, Here Are the Young Men, will be shot by cinematographer James Mather (Frank, Lockout), with principal photography set to start this month. The movie will be edited at Dublin's Egg Post Production.

Alongside directing, which includes his latest feature, Leopard, starring Jack Reynor and Tom Hopper, Macken is also known as an actor and has an upcoming role in George R.R. Martin's Netflix series Nightflyers. He was recently seen opposite Milla Jovovich and Ali Larter in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, as well playing the lead in Sony/NBC's The Night Shift. He is represented by ICM, Magnolia Entertainment and Troika.

Chapman is represented by Troika and WME; Cole is represented by Troika and WME; Taylor-Joy is represented by CAA, Troika and Felker Toczek; and Walsh-Peelo is represented by WME and Independent Talent Group.

Sounds like so many other coming of age summer films with a thin plot. Also sounds like she has a small role.

Sometimes great films have not much of a plot, or at least are described that way in press releases. I wasn't that interested in Manchester by the Sea until the rapturous acclaim, which it lived up to. This is based on an apparently great novel, and it's too early to write it off anyway. I'd wait for a trailer but even then it's not always easy to tell. I'll check it out for Anya Taylor-Joy, if nothing else.

Anya? I'm there. (Though still haven't seen Split.)

Plus sounds like a story I'll like. And even though I have absolutely zero connection to Ireland whatsoever, I tend to like stories that set there or somehow connected to it.

Not sure why that is. Maybe it's my love of Guinness.

I know, I know. Everyone tells me this, and I love the cast.

I just haven't seen a M. Night film since I left the theater so pissed off after seeing Signs. His name just makes me angry, so I have avoided his films.

But I have been re-thinking all of this lately. It's been a long time, and the guy more than likely deserves a second chance. I just need to get over how pissed off that movie made me.

Just finished watching it. It was very average, forgettable. The final half hour is solid but everything leading up to it is dull. Anya Taylor-Joy probably has the third biggest role in the film, but I wouldn't recommend seeing it just for her.
