I order from Amazon, they send in a bubble mailer yet they never arrive damaged. I guess I just have good luck.

Amazon, Best Buy, Target, direct from Shout…I have trouble with them all. I just think the production on these has been especially poor. I find scratches all the freaking time.

I have every release of this line and each one has either dents, paint chipping, or scratches. I don’t think I’ve had a single copy that I haven’t returned at least once, except GOTF but that one doesn’t count.
Personally I think it’s a manufacturing problem plus the fact that they don’t have j-cards for a little more protection. I like the line a lot and normally for Steelbooks, my standards are a bit higher in regards to condition, but I’ve accepted that it’s not going to be possible for me with these. |

Do you just go for the best possible and give up? Nearly all of my still have scratches, even after exchanges and repurchases. I have to do a case swap with Earwig because the spine separated. The back had two small dings and the front had a single scratch. But the dings were successfully rubbed out and the remaining scratch is small so I'll choose swapping a shell over trying an exchange. I just last week decided to pick up GotF and it actually arrived with a smallish scratch on the front (perhaps 5-10mm) that went through the paint. But it had zero dents and was shipped in a box of all things from Amazon (a first in a LONG time), so I guess I'll just stick with it despite being just over $50 for the thing. Even with the scratch, it is in better shape than all but one of the rest I have. I have a feeling that this one was actually limited and is almost gone for good, as it's appearing out of stock at many retailers. So I stopped waiting on it and ordered figuring it'll be unavailable soon. I had held out over fear of arriving dented every time, thinking perhaps it might show up in a store. If I did a replacement, it'd probably come in a baggie like every other steel I've had from Amazon in the past years and be dented the next time around. I guess I could've gone eBay for this one. The Shout titles? No way on eBay, or Amazon. I just have to see these in person. My Nausicaa is kind of rough on the front but it is what it is. That's what I get for waiting until December to decide on picking these up. Last edited by Brian81; 07-12-2021 at 01:01 AM. |

I was pretty late (didn't start until this past March) to the steelbook collection game, and for me finding perfect copies of those Shout steelbooks has been nitemarish as I'm pretty OCD. The main issue is the way those steelbooks are designed:
1. The case is constructed using lower quality (thinner) metal sheet than say steelbooks from Mondo, and as a result easily dented. 2. The steelbook surface is not glazed or matted, but brush metal which make scratches (even the fine ones) and chips highly visible. 3. The "J card", which is not a typical cardboard but a thin piece of paper, not only offers no protection to the backside of the steelbook, also hides defects. Then there is also the time factor: The chance of finding a perfect copy decreases as time from the initial release date gets longer, since without reprint the only copies left are the leftovers/rejects from other collectors. For instance, I went through at least 10 copies of Nausicaä (released last May) from various vendors and the best one I can find still has two tiny shallow dents visible at certain angle. For the most recent releases (The Secret of Arrietty and The Wind Rises) I pre-ordered from Amazon and got perfect copies right away. So yeah for Porco Russo/FUOPO I will pre-order again, but also go to stores to personally inspect and pick up copies just in case. |

Not sure why the standard Shout version points to the 2013 release and not this Shout steelbook but oh well.. I've seen similar error before. The standard is not by Cinidigm. It's by shout. Not same company. Is there a difference in quality ....I'd assume different extra's.. Bit of a mixup. The standard should be pointing to this review not the old 2013 release
