Default 2+2=5 Tattoo

I'm thinking about getting a tattoo on my shoulder of 2+2=5. (It's from the book 1984)

This is the typeface I like the best so far. Any other ideas for a typeface? I want to to be techy-looking.

The typeface is called OCR A Std.

And yes, I am obsessed with that book.

Also, how much would a small tat like that cost?

I like the font.

As for the cost, that's going to depend on who does it, and where you get it done. Higher end shops usually have an shop minimum. They'll charge you a base price regardless of how small it is, and work from there (color, placement, size, how long it takes, etc.) Even a shop without a minimum, though, you're looking at the same criteria.

That one doesn't look like it should be too bad; it's relatively small and I'm assuming you're getting it done in black/grey. It helps that you'll already be taking the design in. I would think that one should be had for $100-$150 maybe. I know that some places might be cheaper, but the ones I go to and inquire in, that's probably what you'd be looking at. Heck, depending on where you go, it might even be more!

Tattoos really are subjective. They vary greatly all across the board. Kind of a crappy answer, but there you go.

I got mine done at Starlight Tattoo in Las Vegas (probably one of the best known shops on the planet and it was over $150 for fairly small piece (I think it's like 2"x2" -- not big and it was a splurge). It really just depends.

I'd be willing to bet that'll cost around $100 as well, depending on size of course. I'm guessing you're not going with a full chest plate size for this and are thinking something like ~2"x4". In that case, yeah, probably like $100.

I'll see if I can find any better fonts, but I think you've pretty much nailed it. That's great for what you're trying to do, I think.

Part of the problem these days is that tattoos are becoming so prevalent, and so many people are getting them, that prices on the whole are kind of going up.

It's not impossible to find them at less cost anymore, but people are getting way more particular about what they put on themselves; the quality, etc. They're not just going to the flash boards anymore, but getting custom pieces more and more frequently.

Artists know this, and they know customers will pay more, and they are charging more.

That one still shouldn't be too bad, though.

Cool concept, for sure. I'm not that into the font you have chosen so far, it's OK, but not great. Here are a couple I quickly did, that I like to help you on your final decision. I also, do not think the cost will that much, as it is a very simple design and from your example, no color.

Let me know if you need the font.

That 2nd one's pretty dope.

The 1st looks like a Star Trek font to me. Not that that's a bad thing...

I love both of those fonts. I'm not familiar with the theme of 1984, so maybe they're better matches to the origin concept than what the OP had. The ones you posted have a very "techy" and "advanced" feel to them (which I personally like), while the OP has more of a "I'm a 1970s robot and I need numbers to look like this so I can read them" feel. Not sure which makes more sense for this application. The fonts in the OP feel more vintage to me.

"Fad" anything always look lame 10 years after the fact. That's why they're classified as fads. Good call, though. I pretty much agree with you in how those look.

I personally would never get a popular tattoo; it'd have to be personally relevant.

Someone needs to google "dyslexia" I guess...........

As far as the cost..... what size will this be? in terms of height of the letters? I'd guess You're looking at $80-$100 for all black, no shading, no color.

I also like the concept though.... The book has held the test of time..... so there's no reason it won't be every bit as relevant 30 years from now, as it is now

As someone else said, prices are pretty subjective. However, given the overall simplicity of the tattoo I wouldn't expect to pay over $60 for that. Alot of artists have a rate of $100 an hour, and that would probably only take 30 minutes max.

Definitely look around for a good shop/artist though. Even though the tatto is simple, straight and clean lines are a must so that it looks nice. As long as its something you'll like for the rest of your life, you won't regret it. You only live once and you should definitely do what makes you happy.

It should be around $100 ( it would be more if you were in LA/Miami area) and you might need to drop it off for him to sketch it and prepare it before he'll put it on you. I have my left arm entirely covered as a sleeve (took about 30 hrs total in the chair), plus at least 7-8 others on my other arm, back, etc.... If you keep it simple it should not be a problem. However, when you throw in any color, expect the price to go up noticeably. Don't forget to tip too, the ones I know will screw you (they'll charge you a lot more or tell you they are too busy) the next time you want one if you didn't tip the last time...and they do remember. Don't ask me how, but they do.

One last thing, don't underestimate the importance of where you put this.....a lot of people I know wish they thought that part out more.....good luck!

Proud of my tattoo:

Cost me $350 and I tipped the guy $40. 3 1/2 hours. One off design he freehanded on me.

Planning on extending it further up on my next trip to Hawaii.

I don't think your tat would cost any more than $100.

The $100-$150 I quoted did include a tip. Sorry I forgot to differentiate that out! Forsberg is right, though. Tip them for their work.

I'm not sure about the $60 quote, though. I guess it's possible, sure it is, but even so a lot of artists now will charge you for at least an hour, even if it does only take a half hour to do so.

Location, location, location, I suppose.
