Problems updating iTunes library?

Has anyone else had problems updating their music library on their iPhone or iPod since Apple eliminated the old iTunes and replaced it with Apple Music?

I had many issues trying to get my music back right when I got a new Mac. I had a PC but used the same Apple account as my phone. Seems difficult to find (my) old purchases. I lost so much music that isn’t available anymore either. I’m trying to decide how to go forward with it. Love the build of Mac but iTunes rights issues has been a real turn off.
Movies? I can’t really say, I never watch anything on there aside from Fast & Furious 8 extended cut and the roadshow of Bedknobs and Broomsticks. My son watches stuff and says it’s missing.

I’m considering a Sony NW-A55 or something similar with expandable memory. I started with a 160gb iPod and liked the capacity but mine is fubar so I’m thinking of complicating my life.
Sony MP3 or an Xperia 1 phone and rip my CDs and non iTunes/Apple Music to them and use what’s left of my files on my iPhone or consider an iPod touch 256 which will be full with just jazz alone.
If not for so much being OOP, I’d be just as happy with binders of CDs.
