United Kingdom Full Alert (Eureka Classics) - October 2021

A late career highlight from Ringo Lam, an action-packed tale of cops and robbers presented in the director’s inimitable style.

Perfectionist, workaholic Inspector Pao (Lau Ching-wan, Running Out of Time) finds himself up against Mak Kwan (Francis Ng, The Mission), a seasoned criminal intending to use his explosive skills to pull off a huge heist. Pao must use his own resources to stop Mak and prevent heavy civilian casualties.

With heartstopping car chasrs on the streets of Hong Kong and brilliant performances by the two leads, Full Alert is an intelligent, high velocity action movie considered to be one of director Ringo Lam’s finest works.

One of my favourite Ringo Lam films with some extremely bruising car chases and action sequences, this was Lam's take on Michael Mann's HEAT

Another fine Ringo Lam crime picture.

Even though it was a change of pace for Lam, I'd like to see Eureka put out Lam's psychological horror Victim.

Hopefully this is better than Heat, which I liked at the time but now feel is an overblown soap opera with a decent De Niro but an off the boil Pacino. I even think LA Takedown slightly edges it; it's half the length, has some rather better dialogue & Scott Plank is oddly better than Pacino in the cop role. I've yet to see a Ringo Lam film I didn't rate though so colour me sold.

Nice, not seen this for ages. I remember really liking it and been bothered that Sexy Beast ripped off some scenes from it.

Lau Ching-Wan is a versatile, underrated actor IMO.

I loved his performance as Inspector Rock in Black Mask as much as I did in the romantic melodrama C'est la vie, mon chéri.

Crikey I don't think Lau Ching Wan is underrated is he? Everybody loves him, he's a huge star in HK and has made films across the pond, and because he really hit his stride in the early noughties, very well known and loved by asian film fans in the west!

And to continue my random pimping out of HK cinema on Netflix: Johnnie To's Loving You (starring Lau and Carmen Lee) is on Netflix and going off on 15th August, so if anyone's interested in seeing more from Lau or To, check that out.

On a related note, also leaving is Lifeline. Most of it is more London's Burning than Backdraft or Ladder 49, but worth it for the last 25mins.

Again, if there is an English dub available, can it be included please? Don't think the UK MIA DVD had one, but if anyone does know of a dub from any source, always nice to have the option, thanks.

Time to revisit this... I remember thinking it was good but far from great like his late 80s work and Full Contact.

According to Rewind, the remastered Mei Ah DVD had some footage concerning Chin Kar-Lok's character cut out. Was that reinstated on the HK bluray?

I just watched the trailer and it looks good. Another Eureka release to put on my list.

OT: What is happening on 15th August in Netflix land? So many HK films are disappearing on that date and a few others tomorrow (31st July).

Almost want to get this purely because of the stunning artwork, but then again previous presentations from Eureka were also beautiful. Just the 80s horror movies have awful artwork

Ditto, on all counts. Have only the Kam & Ronson BD of Prison on Fire II, released over a decade ago.
