Menace II Society is the king of hood films IMHO. Boyz N The Hood is a very good film but, like most of Singleton's early work, tends to get overpreachy and has a more softer side to it at times. Menace II Society is straight up raw, brutally realistic and nasty.

Criterion are a bit hit and miss when it comes to including multiple edits. Sometimes they do sometimes they just include one.

I saw this around a friends house when I was about 12 and was genuinely traumatised. Yes I had quite a sheltered life.

You don't have to be sheltered to be traumatized by something that's this realistic in its portrayal of real people doing real things. Shit like this is far more traumatizing than any horror film could ever be, because we know there are people like O-Dog out there today, doing exactly what he did in the film, and worse.

Hopefully it includes both versions because the directors cut is awful. This movie came out when I was 13 and I remember sneaking into the theater with my cousins to see it and I've seen it countless times since. The theatrical is the way to go.

I'm sure the Hughes Brothers will be involved with the release, so it's ultimately up to them which cuts will be included. Since Criterion were the first to debut the Director's cut on laserdisc, and Albert Hughes has stated he prefers the DC, I think that's all we'll see with the UHD release.

When people ask "why do you want both cuts?" I think the easiest response is "for posterity." Criterion, as well as other labels are interested in preserving a film in whatever edits have existed over time. Moreso than studios. I was bummed when only the extended cut of Until the End of the World was included on their release even though the extended is the only version I know (I first saw it when the extended cut was release theatrically). And as some have mentioned here and elsewhere, sometimes Director's Cuts are a product of not understanding that there are instances where less is more.

I have the digital HD, which is all you can get nowadays as a placeholder. The DVD was not even anamorphic. The digital HD is anamorphic and has DD 5.1.

I'm in but wow the prices are going to be crazy in Canada. The BD's are already very high here.

I don't understand those saying the DC "ruins the flow" of the movie. The difference is a few seconds, all more explicit violence.

I think people are mistaking this with Friday, which only has the directors cut on all current releases and that version certainly ruins the flow and the movie!

That's incorrect. There are scenes with extra dialogue that seems unnecessary (to me anyway) and adds nothing to the scenes.

Boyz N The Hood was good but to me, Menace II Society was better. It was more realistic about the underprivileged life in the urban neighborhood, while Boyz N The Hood is more Hollywood.

Never seen this. What with all the enthusiasm over this announcement, I'll have to rectify that.

Sorry tone and retro, yous are incorrect. There is no extra dialogue unless there's a throwaway line when Wax pays for the gas. Proof is here.
I've seen this movie countless times since taping it off cable way back then, and it's almost impossible to tell which cut I'm watching until the slight extensions play or don't. Friday is ruined by the DC, this one is fine either way.

I remember Menace when it first came out, never saw it. I was like 10. But I do remember it was a huge deal when it came out. I knew Cuba Gooding Jr was in it. Totally forgot about Ice Cube. If I remembered that ice cube was in it, would have checked out earlier. Looking back, it was a mix of the great cast and the truthfulness of the script that made it such a big deal.

Went out and rented from library, excited to finally see it.
