Is it possible for you to save the money for a better system over time? That would be the best way to not waste your money if you want the best out of what you spend. I would start off with a nice 4.0 system with a receiver. Get the receiver here, and then two of these and these. Then, save for a CS20, and another pair of these for 7.0. For a subwoofer, you could look at the offerings from eD, Acoustic Audio, Premier Audio, SVS, AV123, HSU, ect. Internet direct subwoofer manufacturers tend to offer the best subwoofers at the best prices vs. in-store bought subwoofers.

He can get the CS2 from new egg also instead of getting the CS20, it would be cheaper and they are the same center speaker.

Are you sure you want a HTib. You can always take the majority opinion and piece your own system together that you will never ever think of upgrading, or you can try this on for size http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...kyo-_-82120122and have a solid starting place to make intelligent decisions in the future towards your audio equipment.

another big thing that you want to avoid is proprietary speakers!!! they suck if you ever plan to build on your system

if the speaker wires connect to the back of the receiver with specific connectors that are only ment for that unit. or if the speaker wire is hard wired into the speaker, not allowing you to upgrade the wire gauge. some of the cheaper hitb's with built in dvd players have the proprietary connections.

What he means by proprietary speakers are the speakers usually bundled with cheap HTIB systems that do not use standard speaker wire. Bose HTIB systems are great examples of proprietary speakers.

This is the one I'm thinking of getting:

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S6100.../dp/B001AMY7ZQ

The Onkyo HTS-6100.

Its not really a HTiB, even though it is billed as one. It is one of Onkyo's full functioning A/V receivers packaged with 7.1 speaker package, all for around $700. One of the best Home Theatre values on the market

While these Onkyo receivers are only considered "middling" in quality amongst HT enthusiasts, for the average guy, they are pure gold. The sound quality is far above any normal HTiB setup. They are full featured HDMI receivers capable of decoding high-def audio as well as passing PCM (for you PS3 owners).

Many people have said that the speakers are sufficient for most people's needs, the only thing that one needs to do is change the speaker wire for a better gauge. Of course, many consumers purchase better speakers to go with this package after a bit of time.

If this is to be your first Home Theatre A/V setup, I don't suggest going with an ultra-expensive setup. You want something less complicated to cut your teeth on. Something like the Onkyo listed above is a perfect starter kit for a budding HT enthusiast.

Beware!

Onkyo has some other cheaper HTiB setups that are similar to the HTS 6100/7100/9100. (there is an HTS-5100 and an SR-800) and while these are full fledged A/V receivers, the HDMI inputs found on them are Pass-through only, which means they don't process the High Def signal, they pass it straight through to the TV and thus they also do not decode the HD audio codecs. Thats why I suggested the HTS-6100 which is an HDMI repeater that does decode the audio.

Of course, with a PS3, you send the audio as PCM and the HTS-5100 and SR-800 might be able to do that if you have the proper set-up. Research it before deciding to purchase one of those units.

I'm going with the HTS6100. I want single cable connections wherever possible.

Hey guys. I am looking to get a system sometime in the near future (if the price is right), and I was looking at the Onkyo ht-s5200. Now that I see that 6100, it seems like a more permanent system. I don't want to drop a lot of cash on a more serious system yet, but I want one that is capable enough to last more than a few years (I am about to be a grad student, want one that will last me for at least a few years into my professional career).

I am looking at systems because I am also considering getting a ps3 as both a gaming system as well as blu ray player. If I was to get this htib, would I be able to accomplish lossless surround and video with just an hdmi cable? Would the ht-s5200 only be able to do lossy versions of then surround over an optical cable?

The 5200 is very cheap at the moment, but one review mentioned putting the 6100 on pricewatch at newegg and getting it in the 500-550 range. At that price, it is a no brainer to go with the 6100.

Also, do any of you guys know any good sites that review htib systems? I found a few, like zdnet or cnet, but it seems as though they review one new system every three months, and many of their recommended systems are not even made anymore.
