Default Mac compatability. Internal & external

I've done a fair bit of searching, both on this forum and generally on the net and haven't found a definitive answer.

I would like to be able to burn Blu-Ray with my mac for back ups, etc. Blu-Ray video playback would be nice, but is not essential. I have a G5 tower, currently outfitted with a Pioneer DVD-R.

What's best for me?

As an aside, I also have a mac-pro lappy, and so have considered an external, but they are prohibitively expensive. Neither machine has eSATA and I've not found a Firewire 2 external at all. Figured I'd probably just target-mode my lappy and use as an external if I needed to use it with the BR.

Sorry about formatting, more of a mess of info and problems than a real question. Any advice would be welcomed.

Fellow Mac user here, G5 tower and an HD screen. I've been waiting for apple to get off their ass and make something with blu ray compatibility too.

All I do know is you can get mac friendly blu drives that can be used for data storage like a big DVD. What sucks is most of the options are workarounds of apple software, so you have to use a Toast type app to do your business. i.e. http://www.macmall.com/ttsvr/p/Consu...99~pdp.fciafja

What we really have been shorted on is video playback. I believe some machines sold by apple were lacking in the basic HDCP type protocols that blu ray specs demand (I could be wrong here). Maybe they don't want to deal with how many people won't be able to play movies due to lack of HDCP. I hope all their Intel machines are up to spec at least.

Personally I'm still waiting on an integrated solution before I move an inch. I've delayed a computer purchase since Macworld '07 because I believed Apple would be on board with a plan ahead of the competition . In my mind, if they don't do something by WWDC or whatever it is they do in the fall, I'm going to have serious reservations about recommending a mac to anyone.

I know this isn't really much of an answer, but I feel the same way about having a lack of options. Until then, here I sit in anticipation.

Thanks, Mastermang,
I reckon I still want to go ahead with just storage options as I recently lost a lot of footage on an external HDD because I was dithering about buying back up disks, planning on getting a B-RW.

It's not like I expect my G% to be able to handle the HD playback anyway.

Thanks... I'll await an internal recommendation.
