United Kingdom Cop/detective drama series

Saw a trailer yesterday on Channel Five for a new series starting on Channel Five this coming Saturday night, called The Madame Blanc Mysteries (recognised actress Sally Lindsay in the trailer).

Is it classed as a revival, the upcoming Dalgliesh? It starts on Channel Five next Thursday night and continues a week tomorrow. Six episodes in total (three two-part stories I'm assuming being shown as double bills each week).

Hopefully the series gets a Blu-ray release, but you never know with UK detective series.

I remember watching some of the final part of the Roy Marsden-starring adaptation of the P.D. James novel Devices and Desires (have a memory of
[Show spoiler]Dalgliesh going into a countryside cottage which was on fire).

Default Dalgliesh revival series

Watched this past weekend, the first episode of the Dalgliesh revival series ("Shroud for a Nightingale: Part 1"). Based on this first half alone, I'm quietly impressed. I hadn't seen much of the original series when Roy Marsden played Adam Dalgliesh (did Martin Shaw take over the role for a short time in the noughties?), but I thought Bertie Carvel was very convincing as Dalgliesh.

Loved the location of the nursing school (had this isolated feel to it). Thought the use of light and dark in the outside scenes was well used (it made me think a bit of the new Halloween film from three years ago). Looked very nice in high-definition (had hoped this might get a Blu-ray release. However, my hopes sunk when I saw at the end of the end credits, Acorn TV).

Watched the second part of "Shroud of a Nightingale" this past Monday night. As good as the previous part, maybe better. Looking forward to the next two-parter (airing on Channel Five tomorrow and Friday night).

In the end, I was well pleased by the Dalgliesh revival. From what I've read of an interview with the lead actor (think it was in the 'i' newspaper, or in a TV magazine), they are interested in doing a second series. But it sounds to me that it's complicated with the costs for the production (it aired on Acorn tv in the States). Sadly no UK Blu-ray release of the first series.

A ninth series of Father Brown (starring Mark Williams) started earlier this week on BBC One. Fellow UK channel Drama acquired spin-off series The Sister Boniface Mysteries, and that should hopefully start soon (a UK Blu-ray release is scheduled for the spin-off in February (subject to change).

A UK Blu-ray release of a new, fourth series of Shakespeare & Hathaway - Private Investigators is scheduled for release in March (again, subject to change), so it should be airing on BBC One soon.

I too enjoyed the Dalgleish revival, particularly the first and third stories. My personal enjoyment of the second story was marred by my own type casting of the lead guest actor who I shall always remember as Luther's sidekick. I also recognised one of the cast (poison pen letter writer) from her role as the daughter of Nicholas Lyndhurst in the later seasons of New Tricks.

Re BBC shows, I do find it amusing that their promotion is so vague ("coming in 2022" for example), that the best source of programme listings is the blu ray release schedule... 🤔

The same thing happened with Vienna Blood season 2 which I had been hoping for and which I first gained awareness of through the blu ray listing. The first episode of season 2 was disappointing but the other 2 episodes were much better. I enjoy the show most when it references/involves events/conditions of the time. The controversy around the new Freudian techniques, the rampant anti semitism of the pre WW1 era, and in episode 2 the reference to treaties, and so on.

Particularly impressive was the acting of the young girl who was "traumatised" due to finding the body, but who's story was much more complicated than at first it seemed.

Welcome to the case!

Well worth seeing on iPlayer

Plot is good, characters are well developed and acted. Some have criticised the ending but it completes the story while leaving things open for a second series.

Starting on BBC One tonight is a new detective drama series starring David Morrissey, called Sherwood. It continues tomorrow night. All of the episodes will be available on the BBC iPlayer after the first episode has aired (I think).

Starting on ITV next Sunday night is a new series of detective drama series McDonald & Dodds (a third series).

United Kingdom Sherwood

Haven't yet watched the third part of new detective drama series Sherwood (have watched the first two parts and so far I'm quietly impressed. Hopefully all the various storylines will be satisfyingly resolved by the end).

United Kingdom Part 5 of Sherwood tonight?

I think I've been able to get it on Sky's TV Catch-up service, as I'm not sure if tonight's screening of the fifth part of detective drama series Sherwood was shown later on tonight, because of Andy Murray's first-round Wimbledon match over-running
[Show spoiler](not that that's a bad thing as he got through to the second round).

Update: Have downloaded tonight's fifth part, and it is indeed the episode which was scheduled to have aired on BBC One tonight at 9 pm - 10 pm. The sixth and final part is scheduled to air on the same channel tomorrow (Tuesday) night, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens because of the tennis.

Well, they were resolved, but satisfyingly? Nope.

[Show spoiler]None of it really mattered did it? In the end it was about some psycho who murdered a few people because he wanted to be noticed? WTF?

All the stuff about the miners strike & undercover cops was just extraneous bullshit about a bunch of people who couldn't get over something that happened 40 years ago to make the audience think it was much deeper than it was.

It was very well made & the acting throughout was generally great, but the whole storyline was just absolute rubbish.

I have to say I was very happy when Alun Armstrong got killed, because he was an absolute twat. Who shouts 'Scab!' in the middle of a frickin' wedding speech? Deserved everything he got.

I couldn't believe they announced a second series over the end credits. Hope it has David Morrissey solving a proper case this time...

Apologies if this is in the wrong thread, but starting on Channel Five next Monday night (18th July at 9 pm - 10 pm) and running until a week today (21st July), is a new drama series/mini-series called Witness Number 3.

I only found out about this in this week's issue of TV & Satellite Week magazine, but having done a web search the news was announced earlier this month. Very happy to read that Dalgliesh has been renewed for a second and third series (each consisting of three two-part stories).

United Kingdom New detective drama series Karen Pirie

Have only found out about this new UK detective drama series either yesterday or today, Karen Pirie. Seen a promo/trailer for it earlier. It's adapted from the Val McDermid novel The Distant Echo, and starts on ITV sometime in September. Have checked it's IMDb section and there appear to be three episodes in total. The cast includes Lauren Lyle (their credits include drama series Outlander).

United Kingdom Dalgleish: Series 2

I don't know how far off we are with seeing the second series of Dalgliesh on Channel Five (and Acorn TV in the States), but during an episode of Columbo I watched yesterday afternoon (on 5USA) there was a promo for two TV series on Channel Five, including Dalgliesh. No date stated, just (I think) "Coming Soon".
