So luckily I didn't pay much for the German disc. The picture quality is underwhelming compared to the VS edition, and the scenes I hoped were problematic on the VS edition from what I read on here frankly looked similar enough on the German disc but with a tint to them. There are multiple daytime heavy rain scenes with bright sunshine which I personally didn't take to. The German daytime rain scenes weren't as bright as the VS, but they weren't really darker, just a different hue.

As for the deleted scenes, unfortunately there weren't any. I can't find them anywhere on the disc unless it's some kind of easter egg I don't know how to access. I checked all the submenus (there aren't many) and nothing. There's the main film, chapter selection, trailer and then a set of other trailers for films I assume this company released in Germany

Is this the one you got?

I just found out tonight that this movie was released on Blu-ray, and almost feces myself! I love this movie. I didn't ever think this would be released in America, but I had high hopes. I still have it on DVD.

update: I ordered from Germany (I'm in the US) and this one has all the deleted scenes, there's a lot of them. Bad news they're SD, and quite low quality.

got the VinSyn AND the German blu-rays ordered.

Just need to order the decades old Sony DVD for the trailer & TV spot now.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who mentioned the mediabook/digibook edition being the one that actually includes the deleted scenes. Sent a cancellation request for the original German blu-ray and found a copy of the mediabook/digibook off some other website.

Checked this out last night. I remember it being reviewed way back in 1999 but I had never seen it. Not a masterpiece but entertaining movie for sure.

just in case anyone revisits this forum:

-the German release (IMO) has the higher quality transfer, due to being mastered without the added brightness, and seems to have more image fidelity. That said..

-the newer VS transfer removes the annoying pink and green tint that the director originally went with, and he reframed many shots that show more on the top and bottom (or less, depending on each shot). The total bitrate on the disc seems to be about double, but IMO the quality isn't visibly *double or higher.
The best version (IMO) would be something in the middle.

And on those deleted scenes: (German 2-disc only)..they're in SD, and for some strange reason contain many of the main regular scenes from the theatrical (or USA uncut version..hard to say, its the version I grew up on from HBO/Cable, maybe it was cut for Europe?).. but also contain a few short scenes that weren't on any released version.

-There is also a Spanish version that has 2 commentaries from Russell Mulcahy and Christopher Lambert (in French)

Bear this info in mind when purchasing

the most noticeable of these deleted scenes is the full version of the scene where finds John finds one of the victims that was heavily truncated by the MPAA's request that Russell Mulcahy often alluded to.

It wasn't annoying to me. In fact, I thought it added to its style. Thank you for pointing that out, though, so I'll opt for the German release.

Yeah, if the very dark and colour-filtered image was what Mulcahy chose back in 1998, then I think it's wrong of him or VS to try and undo that with added brightness and a more natural palette 20+ years later - even if it (arguably) may look more pleasing to the eye.

I was avoiding the VS version due to the hue, but couldn't resist when they had it cheap and slipped during the 10 for 10 sale. Gave it a watch just to see and ended up liking the new look far more than I thought I would. Bummer they didn't get the commentary so I have to keep my dvd.

the new transfer is re-framed in various scenes and a bit overly bright (like it was a mistake). So I'm working on a best-of-all versions that keeps the new hue, adjusts the brightness, and adds the commentary

Does the Nameless mediabook use the VS master, or the master from the previous German blu-ray? If it's the latter, anyone knows if it's the same low bitrate encode?

These both use the German transfer, not the VS one

Thanks! But you don't know if it's the same encode as the previous German blu-ray...?
