Sony Pictures Uncharted (2022) Never in 3D

According to several websites, Sony’s upcoming Uncharted movie will be released in RealD 3D. I find this believable as it’s a Sony movie and directed by the same guy that made Venom.

As a fan of the games, this could be really cool! I do think Tom Holland seems perhaps not ‘gritty enough’ for an Uncharted adaptation, but there’s room for them to tell a version of the story with the characters when they are younger, especially if they want this to be a franchise. They just released the first trailer and it looks quite interesting:

Nope, it looks horrible. Bad casting and botched job. There will be tons of negative feedback on this.

Not a fan of trailer based doomsdaying hyperbole. Same type of rhetoric that tried to convince me Black Widow or Shang-Chi would be bad

Video game adaptations that try and stick too close to the original games are usually terrible, because the reality is most video game stories are terrible. Naughty Dog are notable for kind of leading the renaissance of actual good storytelling in the video game format, but I replayed the entire Uncharted series recently and the first two (especially the first one) haven't aged well story wise.

Ultimately, this could be a lot of fanboy fuss about nothing, or it may end up being a movie that doesn't really match the tone of the games very well, but serves as a fun action adventure movie in the style of Jumanji or Jungle Cruise. IMO you can never have enough of those in 3D, so either way I'm hopeful this'll be a fun watch and eventually get a 3D disc

This looks so sick! They even got the plane scene in there! I'll be in the theater Day 1 for 3D!

Is that considering BW and SC independently of their 3D?

Are you telling me that the first 2 Uncharted games have the best stories?

If we could get a 3D adaptation in the style of the first 2-3 games, I think that would be swell. Now, while Uncharted always wanted to be a playable movie, it targeted higher FPS than movies use. Will that cause any sort of weirdness when people who have played the games watch the film, one of those "you might not have noticed it...but your brain did!" type situations?

If we're talking casting, I'm not sure I ever pictured Nathan Drake as being a 25 year old who can play a 16 year old. The character struck me as more of a Brendan Fraser/Nathan Fillion type or, for the newer games, Chris Pratt. The archetype of the goofy-yet-capable rakish rogue.

Agreed....Holland hmself has admitted he has played the part too straight...he amdits he should have been more humorous and paid homage to the games....bizarre he even admtted this.

Looks like we have official confirmation from RealD themselves.
"Uncharted" will be released in RealD 3D worldwide on February 18 2022.
It doesn't seem like confirmation to me if they are saying "we hope this one will".

Is that even an official page or some fan or copycat? This is the second time I’ve seen them saying something like ‘we hope x movie will come out in 3D’ which strikes me as a very weird and unprofessional thing for an actual RealD PR person to be saying.

It does seem odd. Does it suggest that they have done the conversion but that the studios might not release it theatrically, as seems to have happened with a few modern films?

Personally I'd like to see this film rejiggered so that Mark Wahlberg is Nathan Drake, because that promo poster is saying to me that this film is going to answer "What if Indiana Jones 4 had cast Shia as Indy and Harrison Ford had been the sidekick?"

I could see Wahlberg as Drake but I don't see how Holland could be Sully. Way too young.

I'm still excited for it. Seems like people are just knocking this because of who was cast.

Definitely. But if you think about it, it makes perfect sense their Drake is younger, they’re presumably hoping to build a franchise out of this and Holland is a major star.

One of the games has you play for a bit as Drake aged like 15 (and then maybe even earlier in the last game) and he’s still a ninja, parkour badass so I don’t think the age of the actor is that important. I’m going to keep an open mind for this one, the trailer looked fun and the storytelling in these games (especially the first 3) are only good by video game standards, it’s not sacrilege to do it a little different from the source material if the end result is a good movie.

I remember reading that years ago, Mark Wahlberg was slated to play Nathan Drake. Honestly, he'd be better casting as the hero Nathan Drake than Holland who resembles a kid still at age 25 now.

I'm a fan of Uncharted 4 PS4. In the games, you actually play as the kid version of Nathan Drake at one part, so maybe that is what is happening here with the casting of Nathan by Tom Holland.

Even so, some of the scenery in the caves with the lake and boat and the light piercing through could look good in 3D.

And Tom Holland is a decent/good actor, so hopefully he can just give a good performance and the story/writing will be entertaining enough to make it a decent adaptation of the games.

Tom Holland is in a lot of movies lately, but hopefully Tom Holland won't be the next James Bond is all I can say. At least not anytime soon until he is maybe 35 to 40 and looks much older than now.

At this point though, the 3D will have to be reported as very strong for me to want to see this in theaters.

Maybe this could work if it were more like "The Adventures of Young Nathan Drake". It seems like what they're going for, with Holland's Drake being shown as being so inexperienced.

Some say the "movie star" concept is dead, I'm inclined to agree, but with the miscasting to try and cash in on Holland's fame, it seems the studio begs to differ. I wonder why they think Holland will be any different than Chris Hemsworth was..?

The trailers keep emphasizing the scene with the cargo hanging out of the airplane. The more I see it, the less it looks like it would be a good 3D setpiece. Although, if it gets back to the "OG" story and avoids the missteps made in U4 then that'll be something.

BTW how was the 3D in Uncharted DD?

Yeah, there are still stars who appear in almost every big movie it seems, often in the spotlight at theaters, so that could be why they said "What about Tom Holland as Nathan Drake?"

I agree, if this is really supposed to be Nathan Drake when he's a kid, it can work well.

Yeah, at this point, after seeing the trailers enough times in theaters before the movie starts, it seems like they've spoiled the whole Cargo Drop scene. The way the 3D could work is comparing the boxes against each other in space, if the 3D is strong. Which reminds me of the effective plane skydiving scene in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows 3D.

Not "movie star", it's "action movie star". That concept was high at the 70s, 80s and 90s but then studios drive to the less bulkier action stars to make those movies. But with the "Fast and Furious" franchise the concept is resurging to the earlier stages... roids are on the rise too for the actors to be more believable to the prowesses they have to perform.

Well, mainly my problem is Wahlberg being like Holland's sidekick. It just makes so much more sense in my mind the other way around. I didn't know Holland was 25 as someone stated above. I would have thought 20 or late teens, but part of that could have been him playing a teenage spiderman.
