Default hd dvd co-chairman pisses off gamers at IFA

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...t_IFA_2007/920 (read the quotes from ken graffeo co-chair of hddvd then go to the "what people have to say" forum at the bottom. the gamers are pissed off at being grouped and discarded by hddvd.) -disregard this as it has already been posted in a previous thread-

You know what else is great. The Video Game Industry is worth more then the Movie Industry and will continue to grow while the movie industry will always be the same.

Just so you know...the movie industry dwarfs the video game industry. And I mean the whole video game industry...console hardware, console games, PC games, cellphone games...all of this is 30 some odd billion dollars. Box office alone is in the high 20 billion range. Throw in DVD and television sales and movies far outsell video games. And that's not including a single hardware sale...of which vidoe games do include in their 30 plus billion number.

So no...the video game industry is not worth more than the movie industry. The only reason you see that paraded around is because someone in their wisdom thought it prudent to compare the entirety of the video game industry from hardware to software...to theatrical box office. But as you might guess...this does not paint the proper picture.

That being said, the video game industry is still a potent and growing market.

"The HD format is about stand-alone players, not game systems. We don’t think gamers will buy movies," said HD DVD Promo Group co-chairman Ken Graffeo."

In reality, it won't. It'll "own" the North American box office records...but considering both Pirates and Spidey both managed 400 million plus in their first week...unless MS thinks they're going to sell nearly 7 million units in the first week...

That's doubtful. Granted, it'll be huge regardless, possibly raking in 150-200 million dollars in revenue over that first week.

Halo 2 made $125 million in the first day and it out grossed PoTC 2. Halo 2 launch was the biggest event in entertainment history. Sorry learned that in a book in college.

Amazing huh? That should really kick-start add-on sales.

So: 10 million Xbox 360 + 4.3 million PS/3 owners, and their high income demographic, off the HDM table? Totally disasterous for HDM if it was actually true.

I seriously can't believe it. I would think someone in that position would have at least a partial clue. Not only is his comment off base, but it's almost completely ass backwards! Most of the people I know (including myself) that are heavy movie purchasers are also gamers.

Seriously though - he can't admit that game consoles owners can be factored in the equation or he's already lost the argument. He's marketing his product by saying what he thinks he can get away with.

He also has said that we are the "early, early adopters" as if the early adopters aren't interested yet. If we accept his premise for a moment, it is better for BD than HD-DVD. By the time thems early adopters show up, BD will players will be the same cost will add to their already better PQ and AQ, better interactivity, better online content, and even more studios and film library.

I can't believe he's allowed in public.

50$/game.

10$/ticket.

Hmm.

Intent of that jerkery comment from myself is to point out, gross isn't really the same representation. And further, margins are different.

Out of curiosity, how much do you think the new Harry Potter book grossed in the first 4 hours of it's release?

Markets are different indicators. And, well, alot of retailers got burned on over-purchased copies of Halo 2 [the really long pre-order period messed with expected demand].

No, he's continuing the same tune HD-DVD folks have been harping for a while. The HD-DVD add-on has a higher attach rate than the PS3. Which is true, for much the same reason he's saying. Folks who buy the HD-DVD add-on are in it for HD-DVDs, while, people who buy a PS3 are in it for the games.

Different focus, hence a different attach rate. Not a new statement by far.

I did notice that they said 90 new titles will be out on Hd-DVD before years end. Does anybody know how many new titles blu-ray is planning to have by years end?

-----I just looked at the coming soon bd's and there are over 100 there, so I guess we are blowing them away with new releases, and to think there are some that has not been announced yet...

I knew Graffeo was stupid but how in the hell could he say that with a representative from Microsoft on the same stage with him? Let's take bets on when he'll be saying "i'm sorry" for that one.

Maybe I'm missing something and I need someone to do the math for me, but if I'm to believe Graffeo and believe that HD DVD sells more stand alone players than Blu-Ray, and gamers don't buy games, how then do Blu-Ray discs outsell HD DVD 2 or 3 to 1?

Let me put it another way - HD DVD sells more players but less discs. And this is taking gamers out of the equation, according to him.

How is this guy in charge of anything?
