The Criterion might seem darker but that's more of an issue with Criterion's screenshots (ex: the "Leave Her to Heaven" screenshots on their site have off colors despite the fact it's the exact same as Twilight Time's).
Are the publicity stills on the Criterion website proven to be actual scans of their releases? I honestly don't know, but I'm inclined to think it might not be a definitive representation of their release.

2K restoration alludes to that being the right read of all this.

Sad to say.

Those screenshots look damn good, I had no idea the original BD looked like that either. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was a bad transfer. So, yeah, I guess the biggest draw for this release are the extras? Sort of like Dr. Strangelove in that regard, except not as compelling. I really like the cover art though, it would make for a nice poster.

edit: The artist has the original art without the cover treatment, as well as some original sketches for it on his instagram

I'd really like to see those new interviews, I'm a big fan of this film, the Coens, and the cast of this one. I only spent $4 on the old one technically. So I guess I might go for this during a 50% off sale.

OK, maybe I didn't phrase that well. Are all of the movie stills on Criterion's site actual scans of their specific releases? I'm just thinking more historically in the industry, that photo images from a film are not necessarily directly from the same presentation.

It's possible that Fox could've licensed stills for promotional purposes. Granted 2K and HD aren't exactly the same. It's possible it's a new transfer.

Oh hai again.

They describe the 5.1 soundtrack for their release as "new", so hopefully they've sorted that out.

The missing music cue really was a dreadful omission.

I watched the Criterion last night and it's definitely not a new ground up restoration from the camera negative. Some of the optical inserts are a bit rough looking and there are fluctuations in a few shots - overall it's a bit soft looking and there are some minor compression artifacts. It would make sense that it's the old version with some new extras (I only watched the Bryne and Turturro one which is OK).

So, yes, you will likely be 'upgrading' for the extras only.

Just the new 5.1 remix track as far as audio? How did it sound?

Sounded fine but I'm not sure it's really new - the specs of the old disc list 5.1 DTS_HD Master Audio as well and I no longer have the old disc to compare.

I'm assuming you have a preview copy to review it? Maybe the back of the case or the booklet clarifies this info from Criterion:
Quote:
2K digital restoration, approved by director of photography Barry Sonnenfeld and filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen, with new 5.1 surround soundtrack mix presented in DTS-HD Master Audio

I mean, are we surprised that this isn't a new scan? It was never advertised as being one in the first place. Both the official announcement and Criterion's website say "2K digital restoration". It's a shame, but there was no indication that it was ever going to be a new scan.

I'm curious to see how Written on the Wind looks, as that's supposed to be a "NEW 2K digital restoration".

That's a good point regarding the semantics. I already own the Fox Blu but hearing it's basically a mirror release with new extras makes me reticent. I was hoping for... more, I guess?

I know the Coens don't care for HDR so perhaps Criterion decided no point doing a 4K scan and just release what was already there.

Well that is disappointing. I may just keep the Fox release.

I just borrowed the disc. Distributors like Alliance have had it in stock for weeks now.

The music cue is present during 'What heart?' if that clarifies things.

My copy from Best Buy shipped yesterday, looks like it will arrive tomorrow. Like everyone else, I'm not expecting it to look any better than the old disc. But the extras will hopefully be worth the double dip. And I'm curious about whether they've actually fixed the 5.1 (I doubt it).

There’s a music cue missing from that bit in the old Fox Blu? Methinks I’ll be (slightly) upgrading at some point then. It had been a long time between my last viewing of my old LD and my first viewing of the Blu, I guess I missed that.

Is the theatrical trailer included? It better be. Too bad they apparently didn’t port over the existing Barry Sonnenfeld interview.
