Indian 3D Movies and 3D Blu-ray releases

Welcome to the Indian 3D Movies and 3D Blu-ray releases thread, where we can discuss about new films from India that are releasing or released in 3D.

This thread was originally for the upcoming natively shot Malayalam 3D film "Barroz", but it's best to discuss about Indian 3D movies in one single thread and avoid overcrowding the forum with many threads for films that are not getting 3D Blu-ray releases anytime soon, unless some miracle happens (that would be great though).

So far a few Bollywood films are out on Blu-ray 3D. There are plenty of 3D films from India, but unfortunately they're exclusive to the theatrical release only, and not on Blu-ray 3D, except a few. There are some 3D DVDs as well.

So this is an Indian Malayalam-language (not Bollywood aka the Hindi film industry) fantasy film that will be shot in 3D, directed by Mohanlal, one of the most celebrated stars in Kerala, India.

So the premise goes like this: The adventures of Barroz who has been protecting D'Gama's treasure for 400 years and has been entrusted to hand over the treasure to a true descendant of D'Gama.

As a Keralite myself, it seems promising, considering the fact that it's gonna be shot in 3D, and a lot of Mohanlal fans around the world are excited about it.

Also, director Jijo Punnoose, who directed the first Indian 3D film released in 1984, My Dear Kuttichathan (trans. My dear little goblin), will also be working on this film, which makes it more promising.

Slightly off topic, but My Dear Kuttichathan is one of my 3D viewing dreams - have heard about it a few times... and it sounds like fun! Hope this one makes it to blu too

Yeah, that would be cool to see on Blu-ray 3D, considering the fact that the film got re-released in 3D some years back.

As for Barroz as well, hoping both these films get a Blu-ray 3D release.

There are some other Malayalam films that are gonna be releasing in 3D next year, some Bollywood films as well, so I'll make another thread for them in a while.

In case you're wondering there are plenty of Indian films, but they're not Bollywood films. Bollywood aka the Hindi film industry is only one of many film industries in India.

There's Mollywood (Malayalam film industry), Kollywood (Tamil film industry), Tollywood (Telugu film industry), Sandalwood (Kannada film industry), Marathi film industry, Bengali film industry, Punjabi film industry, Assamese film industry and so much more.

It's probably best just to make one single thread for Indian 3D movies, seeing as how none of them tend to come out on 3D Blu-ray and every individual thread quickly goes off-topic with discussion of other titles, just as this one has done.

Haunted 3D (2011) is a horror film in 3D, and it was out on Blu-ray 3D, but I'm not sure that this is a 3D release.

I remember as a kid this was available on DVD and there were anaglyph glasses along with it. So yes, it is an anaglyph release.

Anyway, back to the topic, shooting for Barroz has started.

If the film has some really strong 3D, and I'm hoping for that, this needs to be on 3D Blu-ray.

It might be a new task for the makers to get this out on 3D Blu-ray, since past Malayali filmmakers have been releasing 3D DVDs with anaglyph glasses.

Ra.One, Delhi Safari, and Dam 999 are the only Indian films on Blu-ray 3D. Raaz 3 and Haunted are on anaglyph 3D Blu-ray. I saw 2.0 in 3D in theater, and it looked fantastic.

Blu-ray 3D:

Note: Ra.One is missing English subtitles. Delhi Safari is English-dubbed but missing original Hindi audio. Both are mediocre 3D conversions, but you may find some enjoyment from them, especially if you can remux. Dam 999 is a poor 3D conversion, likely performed by early AI software, and is not recommended.

Anaglyph 3D Blu-ray:

Note: Raaz 3 and Haunted are native 3D with mostly good anaglyph conversions that work consistently. Haunted is a bit darker and more desaturated with medium to occasionally strong 3D depth and several pop-out moments. Raaz 3 is less desaturated but has more color conflicts. It has stronger 3D depth and better composition and pop-outs but also an A/V sync error where the audio is 1.0 sec ahead of the video for the entire film.

Anaglyph 3D DVD:

Note: Aabra Ka Daabra's anaglyph works inconsistently. Dangerous Ishhq and Kochadaiiyaan have poor anaglyph that is not fusible and not recommended.

"83" is a new Hindi / Bollywood sports biopic film based on India's victorious Cricket World Cup run in 1983. It will be released in 3D in India, no info about a 3D release internationally.

Still waiting for (ENDHIRAN) 2.0…one of my top most wanted. Incredible 3D, whacked out film, so glad I caught this twice in the theatre.

RRR is a Telugu film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, who directed the Baahubali films (you know, where people used a tree as a catapult to reach the top of a fort?), and this will be his first film in 3D (converted) releasing on January 7 2022 in India. No word about an international release as of now.

This film looks absolutely bonkers and it's a different take on the British colonial rule in India, and it goes WAY too far for me LOL. If you're looking for something where you switch off your brain and enjoy whatever is shown on screen, this is it for you.
Initially I didn't want to watch this at all, but when I saw the 3D announcement, I made up my mind to watch this just for the 3D version.

As for the possibility of a 3D Blu-ray release, Rajamouli's films usually get Blu-ray releases, so if the 3D conversion is really good and worth picking up, I guess we'll try and ask for a 3D Blu-ray, and we might get one somewhere, hopefully.

Yeah, Sholay was re-released in 3D in 2014.
Wish there was a 3D Blu-ray release as well, but instead it's only available in 2D on Disney+ Hotstar.
