Default Need ideas for test songs. BASS

I work for a arcade/coin operator. We install and service arcade games, pool tables, Juke Boxes, etc...

A co worker and myself were trying to trouble shoot a digital juke box that was clipping pretty bad on heavy bass notes. We both took turns selecting songs that we thought were "bass heavy" to test it. Now we werent playing "rap" style bass, but more heavy hard hitting drum bass.

I always choose either Janes Addiction's - mountain song, or Metallica's - Blackened. He usually chooses AC/DC - Thunderstruck or Metallica's - one.

Basically i was wondering what would you guys use to test out an amp or subwoofer to really push its limits?

Distance - Feel Me

That song hits the bass and never quits. It's also a pretty good electronic song.

Sober ( ) has some pretty heavy resonating-type bass. Not sure if that is what they used.

Are you looking for tight, punchy bass e.g. bass drum from a heavy rock band; or soft pillowy deep bass that you'd hear in old school prominently bass-driven rap by guys like DJ Magic Mike?

Blackened is a good choice for that double-bass pedal, fast, punchy bass drum style bass. Tool has a ton of stuff like that. (both mentioned already) You might go with Megadeth for some more of that; you could also consider Rush and Dream Theater for simply dynamite drummers.

There's something you might not have considered in the bass genre, and it's the transition between tracks one and two of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon: Speak To Me/Breathe (Breathe In The Air) into On the Run. Phenomenal effects, especially for the time period. Good bass, but it's a lot of mid-range stuff. Still sounds spectacular on a good system, though.

A great overall album for old-skool, bass-in-your-face rap is DJ Magic Mike's Bass is the Name of the Game album. I always thought song four, about 40 seconds in, is pretty cool.

Pretty much every song from Puscifier '"V" Is for Vagina' (side project from Maynard James Keenan (singer from Tool)). That album is all bass!

"Burn" by NIN (found on the Natural Born Killers soundtrack and on the 2nd disc of the SACD version of "The Downward Spiral").

"This Could Be Anywhere In The World" from the Alexisonfire Crisis album (low bass that will give a hard time to poor subwoofers).

"Lookaway" from Sepultura "Roots" album.

"Shock" from Fear Factory "Obsolete" album.

"Critical Acclaim" from Avenged Sevenfold S/T album.

Also, most songs by Peaches have pretty deep bass on them (I know not Metal music but I really like them!).

This is what comes from the top of my head right now.

I can't find any of my old school bass CD's, but I also had Bass Computer and I Got the Bass. Those were the days when you just wanted in your face bass. Man, I really miss my old setup with dual 12" JL Audio subs and about 4000 watts of Phoenix Gold amps.

That's Aphex Twin. Best electronic artist of modern times, IMO. Also, lots of his songs feature clean, heavy basslines.

I can't remember where I got these from, but I had them in a Word document saved on my hard drive.

Mahler (From the DTS demo DVD) "Mahler's Symphony No. 2":
- Finale (0:52:50)*

Tchaikovsky (Telarc recording, also from the DTS demo DVD):
- "1812 Overture" by the Cincinnati Symphony (0:12:45)*
- "1812 Overture" Final cannon shots (0:15:06)*

The below selection are from Michael Murray's "Organ Blaster CD" sampler

Johann Sebastian Bach "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" the quintessential organ bass classic. All below time selections from the Skinner/Schilicker organs, First Congregational Church in Los Angeles:
- (0:00:31)*
- (0:07:25)*
- (0:08:25)*

Andre' Campra "Riqaudon from Idomeneo" Aeolian-Skinner organ, Church of the Advent, Boston:
- (0:01:20)*
- (0:02:45)*

Joseph Jongen "Toccata from the Symphonie Concertante", Ruffati organ, Davis Symphony Hall in San Francisco:
- (0:02:55)*
- (0:03:59)*
- (0:04:38)*
- (0:06:40)*

Charles Marie Widor "Toccata from Symphonie No. 5, Opus 42", Aeolian-Skinner organ, Symphony Hall, Boston:
- (0:01:45)*
- (0:03:45)*
- Finale*

Antonio Soler "The Emperors Fanfare", Aeolian-Skinner organ, Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City:

- (0:02:17)*

Cesar Franck "Beaucoup from Grande Piece Symphonique, Opus 17, Cavailli-Coll organ, St. Sernin Basilica, Touloose France:
- (0:01:25)*
- (0:04:40)*

Oliver Messiaen "Dieu Parmi Nous from La Nativite", Ruffatti organ, Davies Symphony Hall:

- (0:03:07)*

John Cook "Fanfare", Willis organ, Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury England:
- (0:03:41)*
- (0:05:25)*

Camille Saint Saens "Maestoso from Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, Opus 78", Church of Saint Francis de Sales, Philidelphia:
- (0:00:30)*
- (0:05:00)*
- (0:07:25)*

Beastie Boys
- "Brass Monkey" Killer 50Hz stuff.

City of Angels (Soundtrack)
- "Uninvited" Great high 20s bass in this one.

AC/DC
- "Highway to Hell"

Metallica "Cunning Stunts":
- "Enter Sandman" (cannon shot)* Disk 3 Track 3 (0:10:05)
- "One" (opening gunfire)* Disk 1 Track 7*

Nine Inch Nails
- "Closer"

Notorious B.I.G.
- "Dead Wrong" Main bass is 30hz and up...but there's a good bit of signal real low too --- like 10-20Hz low.

System of a Down
- "Sugar"

Marilyn Manson
- "Great Big White World" At about 45-55 seconds into the song, check out the synthesized bass bridge. And...the end of the same song, as the volume drops quickly and just before DOPE SHOW starts. More good synthesized stuff down to the mid 20Hz range.

That's from the SVS site!

(I wish they could update it sometime, or maybe we can do our own list!)
