Default Auteur Directors

This is a thread to discuss which directors that can be considers as Auteurs, as described here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auteur

Initial proposals:

Alfred Hitchcock
David Lynch
Ingmar Bergman
Stanley Kubrick
Roman Polanski

Any other proposals or opinions? And who should not be considered an Auteur, even though they may be a famous director?

Pleas let us know what you think.

Wes Anderson for sure. Also Quentin Tarantino.

Probably Christopher Nolan, too.

Possibly Edgar Wright post-Cornetto trilogy (although that’s just two films, so maybe it’s too soon)

I don't buy into the auteur theory. A film is a collective work.

Auteur theory is an imperfect model to try and explain the authorship of a work of art that has many inputs.

After a whole lot of organized viewing, I feel that auteur theory has something to say that points to the truth. The director has a greater authorial hand, on average, than any other input whether it be producers, writers, actors, or best boys. It's not everything, of course. Sometimes directors only work well once, or with certain collaborators.

But in the aggregate, it seems to hold true.

That being said, "auteur directors" is balderdash. They're all auteurs in that sense. The label seems to exist more as a way to short hand the idea of "easily identifiable" directors for whatever reason, usually some stylistic flourish.

There's literally hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds. Too many to list.

Most non-Hollywood directors might meet the criteria. Many in Hollywood too if not most.

Even Paul W.S. Anderson and Zack Snyder are auteurs.

It's like trying to find out which people who write novels are "novelists" and which are "writers".

Whatever.

I would like to make the following proposal regarding the topic of discussion; that Director George A. Romero was an Auteur film director, creating a path for a brand new and long-unliving horror genre.

Hey bud. Have you posted your thoughts on John Ford's Fox era stuff anywhere? I've had the dvd box set for a couple years and shamefully I've still only seen the ones that have a bluray releases (and Judge Priest). After going through my indicator set I think that'll be my next big journey.

Yeah, I've finished all of Ford. I write daily reviews on my little blog journal thing, going back through the Fox stuff as well.

I want to pick up that set.

If I could recommend only one film from that set that probably deserves more attention, it would be Drums Along the Mohawk, but there's a fair amount of good stuff from that period.

Just to clarify: "Good director" does not necessarily mean Auteur as per the definition linked to in the OP.

Oh I know. Trust me I would never include paul w.s. anderson in any list of good directors - whatever the criterion might be.
