Default The Guyver R-Rated Cut coming from Unearthed Films

Surprised we missed this, but it was announced back in January of this year. Looks to be the R-rated cut, but no mention of the second film. I really wonder how Unearthed Films was able to get this over Arrow for a US release.

I actually enjoyed the second one more, would love both together as a double feature.

Looks like it will be a brand new remaster with the added footage. Hope the second one is also coming.

Guess I didn't need to buy the Canadian release after all (still a great package though, will keep it).

Nice! I'll be grabbing this for sure as I never did get around to picking up the Arrow edition.

Yeah, if anything I'm keeping the Arrow for the art and booklet and will swap the discs out. Either way, it will be nice to finally have the R-Rated cut of the film on Blu-ray.

I have the uncut German release, so I doubt I’ll pick this up. Still, happy to see this get a domestic release on blu. I hope they pick up the sequel.

Wonder if this is a case where they can only release the R-rated version. Arrow got their material from Warner and they only appeared to have the so-called director's cut. I don't think Warner owns the first film in the US anymore, DVDs are OOP and it's not available digitally. I'm thinking Unearthed got the rights from the producer (who wouldn't work with Arrow) and they had access to the R-rated cut.

If Warner stills holds the material for the DC then at least the Arrow copy would be worth holding onto for the alternative version. A Nightbreed situation.

It does look like Warner still owns the sequel. C'mon Scream Factory, now's the time.

.
I also heard that the producer didn't want to work with Arrow because he was hoping to bring back the franchise or something along those lines. Looks like that didn't happen and now he wants to work with Unearthed films? Unearthed does mostly good work, but not as good as Arrow.

Yeah I doubt they will get any of the extras that Arrow produced either unless Arrow is feeling really generous.

The producer probably figured out no one will have interest in a Guyver reboot if the original film isn't even accessible. Hope we will get the original anime OVAs soon too.

I'm all in on this one. The second one could take a while, though. They also said they were going to release Evil Dead Trap 2 and that's stalled.

To summarize:

- The Guyver was initially financed by a consortium of Japanese companies. I believe this original cut is the so-called "R-Rated" cut (it was never officially rated by the MPAA).
- It was recut for the US (aka Transmutations). This is the PG-13 cut or The Director's Cut.
- A third international cut (aka Mutronics) was prepared by Imperial Entertainment.

My guess would be that Unearthed went through the "consortium" to secure licensing for the "R-Rated cut", while Arrow probably went through Brian Yuzna and got the PG-13 cut for their UK / Canada releases.

Too be honest, I didn't even know there was a R rated cut of this movie.

I guess I should watch my copy to see if a double dip is warranted. I can't imagine that an R-rated cut will be a whole lot different - usually it's just a snippet or two of extra blood spurts or something like that. If that's the case I'll just hang onto the Arrow edition. It's got a neat slip.

Here are the cuts

https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=782353

Looks like three cuts total. One is a blood splatter, and other two are death scenes removed. One monster gets his arm torn off, followed by snapping his neck which causes a blood burst. The other death is the dude get his throat slit causing a blood spray that covers the face of one of the characters.

Man, I know I'll probably pick this up, yet again, but we really need that second movie. It's hands down the better movie and it's not even close, imo. I like this one for the goofiness, but the second one kicks ass and has no terrible attempts at rapping.

Yeah, the second one has some good fight scenes, awesome gore, and is a better film overall, but the first has its merits as well as it's pretty iconic and a mostly fun film. It also has a the nostalgia factor for me as it introduced me to the character.

I THINK the second film is with WB in the US.

I own an old Japanese LaserDisc of the movie and the cut that's on that disc is, as far as I can tell, is the true director's cut.

Its basically the same version found on the Arrow blu-ray but with the graphic violence intact.

What do you mean Evil Dead Trap 2 has stalled? Where was this mentioned? Also, it sounds like you might have heard something about the second Guyver film?

The proper cut of the film was only available overseas. The US had a neutered distributor-made PG13 cut and later a cable edit that was billed as "Director's Cut". WB/NLC only had the dupe prints that were cut by themselves, so that's what was put out in the US. This is supposed to be the original version of the film, as it was intended to be seen by those behind the film.
