Germany Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920) 4K UHD

Released on 4K UHD by Studio Hamburg on 13th May, including a 2019 score by Uwe Dierksen and Hermann Kretschmar. Extras include the documentary Dr. Caligari – Die Geburt des Horrors im Ersten Weltkrieg (When Horror Came to Cinema), restoration featurette and booklet.

While I doubt it will be English friendly, I’ve seen the film enough that I’m not sure I need the intertitles to understand it.

Also on the regular release. The steelbook added From Caligari to Hitler, which was later included as a second feature on Hitler’s Hollywood.

I suppose there’s a chance Kino or Eureka could release the film in 4K in future.

Could this end up being Eureka's first 4k release? If it is I'd be onboard day 1, but how much better can the movie look? The blu ray just opened up the movie so much, I have a hard time imagining it can look much better.

One thing that would make me get this again...an attempt at reconstructing the original score. I believe the old French DVD included this.

Is this the first silent film on UHD? I let my fingers do the Google, but I came up snake eyes.

I'm not sure that this a Day-1 buy for me, but maybe close to it, since I don't own a BD copy. It looks like a worthy package, but the price?

Will 4K UHD really make any difference here? I mean, considering all that is left is some beat-up prints and dupes of prints? No pre-print material exists any longer.

I just have a hard time believing more data can be salvaged from what is left.

Actually, the vast majority of Caligari's negative survives. Look at the exisiting Blu-ray...that's clearly not a blurry dupe they used.

So where you got your information from, I don't know. Seems like the same knee-jerk post we see everytime so much as a rumour of a old movie getting a new-release is discussed.

Will this be the oldest film to be released on UHD so far?

The Arrow release of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein includes a 1910 short in the extras, but I doubt that’s in 4K quality.

In terms of feature it would be, I don’t know if this has HDR but I would be curious what that would do to colour tinting.

Without checking, I think the 1910 Frankenstein is 2K.

Remember back when people were predicting the end of physical media?
We’re now getting 1920s silent films being released on a dying format

I believe that there is more data. Look how fine the grain is for most films of this period like Häxan (1922) and Nosferatu (1922). Caligari has a similar grain structure, meaning that we are a long way from zooming into noise.

Like others, though, I wonder how much of a benefit HDR would give to this film, especially considering the colored filters. I imagine that a low level grading might help solidify the image, but I'm not an expert. I'm on the fence.

Yes. I had the same question, myself, but upon further research the oldest to date is Dracula (1931) in native 4K.

It looks like we have the cover art. No word of HDR, but I suspect it won't have it. No word on price that I've seen here nor elsewhere.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-C...lu-ray/312837/

And here's a little more information in ze German tongue (but not much).

I'm super excited about this release, though it'll be an import for me. Pricy, I'm sure.

I just saw this as being available soon through Arrow's streaming service. If this is getting a German UHD, I wonder if Arrow will put out a UHD in UK?

Eureka still has the license in the UK unless I'm mistaken. I suppose it could be a case of Eureka having the Blu-ray rights but Arrow having UHD rights? Regardless this isn't the kind of title I would expect Arrow to release.

No. But, this film doesn't have many intertitles. There is this:

http://www.aellea.com/script/qCALIGARI.htm

Just like a libretto. Fire up the English.

I just don't want to wait for a "maybe release" elsewhere.

Studio Hamburg did degrain some of their releases of classic films, so I'd wait for screenshots or a release elsewhere.

This movie is mentioned quite a few times in the new Nick Cage flick, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. He makes his daughter watch it with him(it's one of his favorites) and she hates it.
